Ukraine has secured supplies of US-produced liquefied natural gas from Greece for the coming winter to compensate for the loss of domestic output caused by Russian strikes.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the LNG deal at a joint news conference with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens on Sunday.

He said that Ukrainian and Greek companies signed an agreement to ship US LNG to Ukraine via Greece.

Zelenskyy said “gas supplies will begin in January.” He called the deal an ‘”important part of the large energy package that we have prepared for this winter to provide Ukraine with gas.”

The president said in an earlier statement, “We already have agreements in place for financing gas imports — and we will cover nearly 2 billion euros needed for gas imports to compensate for the losses in Ukrainian production caused by Russian strikes.”
