Zagreb Grand Prix
Lucy Renshall (Stewart JA) delivered the standout performance of the weekend in Croatia, securing a bronze medal in the -63kg category.
Renshall began her day in the Round of 32 and progressed confidently through to the semi-final, showing excellent form throughout. It was there that she faced her toughest challenge, with the contest going into golden score and extending to nearly nine minutes before she unfortunately picked up a third shido for hansoku-make.
Despite the setback, Renshall showed remarkable resilience, bouncing back to make a statement in the final block. She dominated the bronze-medal contest, throwing her opponent for ippon in under two minutes to secure her place on the podium.
This is Renshall’s second consecutive medal from just two international events this year, following her gold at the Sarajevo European Open three weeks ago, showing she is well and truly up and running in her return.
Acelya Toprak (Camberley JC) produced another strong performance in the -57kg category, finishing 5th.
The Camberley judoka has impressed since returning to the British team, and her showing in Zagreb continues the momentum built through silver at the Tallinn European Open, bronze at the Guadalajara Grand Prix, and 5th at the Tbilisi Grand Prix.
Ben Levy (Budokwai) secured an impressive 5th place in the -73kg category, his best result to date at a Grand Prix.
The Budokwai judoka has been in outstanding form this year, adding this result to a season that already includes gold medals at the Berlin and Kaunas Junior European Cups, gold at the Warsaw European Open, and strong finishes at both the Junior World Championships and Junior European Championships.
Charlie Young (Ryecroft JC) placed 7th in the -66kg category, adding another solid result to his growing list of international performances.
The Ryecroft judoka has been building strong form throughout the season, having narrowly missed the podium with a 5th-place finish at the Guadalajara Grand Prix and claiming medals earlier in the year at the Prague European Open and the Podgorica Senior European Cup.
