WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – In an about-face, President Donald Trump now supports passage of a House bill that would compel the DOJ to release files – related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Less than a week after President Donald Trump failed to stop a House discharge petition, the President is now calling on House Republicans to support the legislation. The discharge petition is a parliamentary tool, in this case, utilized to force a vote on access to the full Epstein files.
In a sharp reversal, in a social media post late Sunday, President Trump said that House Republicans should support a bill that would require the Justice Department to release all of the files it has related to its criminal investigation into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The President writing on social media: “House Republicans should vote to release the Epstein files, because we have nothing to hide, and it’s time to move on from this Democrat Hoax.”
The President on Monday in the Oval Office explained his about-face, “I’m all for it. You know, we’ve already given 50,000 pages. You do know that? Unfortunately, like with the Kennedy situation, with the Martin Luther King situation, not to put Jeffrey Epstein in the same category, but no matter what we give, it’s never enough.”
Republican support for the bipartisan bill was growing quickly ahead Monday’s vote on the House floor. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) estimated that “100 or more” House Republicans could vote in favor of the legislation. That momentum may be one reason why Trump decided to reverse course.
Even if the bill passes the House, it’s still not clear whether the Senate would take up the measure. Attorney General Pam Bondi could also still refuse to release the Epstein files – citing the DOJ’s ongoing investigation. During the Oval Office event, President Trump indicated, “sure, he would” sign the finished discharge petition if the Senate also approves it.
