FORT DRUM, New York (WWNY) – Fort Drum is among 9 military installations being considered for a nuclear reactor.
The Army made the announcement on Tuesday.
It’s part of the Janus program, the Army Corps of Engineers’ effort to improve energy reliability on military installations.
The following installations are on the list:
Fort BenningFort BraggFort CampbellFort DrumFort HoodFort WainwrightHolston Army Ammunition PlantJoint Base Lewis-McChordRedstone Arsenal
Fort Drum is searching for a new source of power for the post after a biomass facility, which met 100 percent of Fort Drum’s energy needs, closed in 2023.
It’s believed the reactor would power up essential parts of the post, but not necessarily all of it.
The Army says it evaluated mission-critical installations, energy requirements and resiliency gaps, power infrastructure, environmental and technical considerations.
The final number and location for the reactors will be determined as part of the acquisition process, the Army said.
