  1. Awkward posting, as it is a live feed, so the main focus isn’t the above. I hope this format is okay?

  2. Remember when the Greens used to stand for environmental issues …?

  3. What day though, as the game has a decent chance of kicking off at midnight or 2am UK time.

  4. I mean, aye sound, but earliest possible kick off time is likely going to be 5pm (later games at 8pm, 11pm, and 2am. Day off following it might be a better shout.

  5. Great that they’re dealing with the major issues facing the country.

  6. It’s always parties not in power that have good suggestions like this

  7. To play devil’s advocate:

UK-wide estimates put the cost of a bank holiday at between £831 million to £2.4 billion as the extra retail and hospitality sales don’t make up for factories, offices, etc being closed.

Pro-rated the impact on Scotland might be £80-250m, which could be enough to tip some organisations over a precipice, with resultant job losses.

Is that a sacrifice we should accept as a country to watch a football game that’ll take place outside business hours?

  8. Considering the time of day the match will kick off at GMT, the chances are it will be an evening match or a very early morning one (assuming Scotland is not invited to play one of the joint hosts in the opening few games over the weekend).

So the most sensible course of action is a Bank Holiday the next working day after the first match.

I do hope Employers in Scotland will jump on the positive advertising around Scotland’s attendance and maybe use it as an excuse to get workers into the office to watch the match type of thing, but you can never tell when Profits over People is priority.

  9. France 98 was ruined as the match kicked off before schools go out. Happily had an understanding teacher and a tiny tv screen.. let’s just be sensible and work it out. May as well have some fun in life.

  10. Can’t even get a holiday for our patron saint!

  11. At the last one I was working in a lab in the West End of Glasgow. I think about 2/3rds of the building walked out and went to pubs 2 hrs before kickoff. It was a strange day, the streets were deserted after it, as everyone was watching it somewhere!

  12. Glad to see I wasn’t the only person that instantly started questioning whether this would even be required because of the timezone difference!

    Kick-off times will be 5pm, 8pm, 11pm and 2am for us.

Having an entire day off for a 5pm kick-off would be stupid – just let your staff knock off an hour early or whatever.

If it’s 8pm, it’s literally no different to a normal mid week match.

    If it’s 11pm or 2am, it’s the next morning you’d need off.

Whoever came up with this either didn’t know where the World Cup is being held, or has no idea about timezones…
