(WFSB) – Aetna customers who see UConn Health doctors may soon have to find new ones or pay more for their coverage.
The insurance company said it needs to reach a deal with UConn Health in the next 10 days.
As the contract negotiations have moved forward, the debate between the two organizations has been heated.
Channel 3 has been watching a dramatic back-and-forth between the two groups as the Dec. 1 deadline to reach a deal looms over their heads. Thousands of Connecticut customers who could be impacted.
Aetna threw UConn Health under the bus. It said that throughout negotiations, the health system proved that it wants to get paid more to provide the same services. It went as far as to say UConn Health wants to be the most expensive health system in New England.
UConn Health clapped back and said that is false. It claimed their reimbursement rates are among the lowest in the state.
It also said Aetna is jeopardizing the deal after not getting back to the health system’s newest contract proposal that was sent weeks ago on Nov. 3.
However, if the two groups can’t reach an agreement, it does not mean changes will come customers’ way immediately.
Connecticut state law has a 60-day cooling off period for situations like this. It’s meant to give customers a few months to stay under the same coverage as they figure out what they want to do next.
It doesn’t apply to everyone. Customers will have to call the number on the back of their insurance card to find out.
