  1. Submission statement:

More than a dozen MEPs have written to the President of the European Parliament requesting observer status for representatives from Northern Ireland, to prepare for a united Ireland. Unionist politicians have spoken out against the request. This move follows a recent statement by the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland that a referendum as per the Good Friday Agreement is ‘way off in the distance’.

  2. If Russia did this for the Donbass regions, people would correctly identify it as the irredentist nationalism that it is.

The nationalist claims of Irish politicians on their neighbor’s territory *should* be scorned by politicians across Europe, but because Irish nationalism is coded as “progressive,” it gets a free pass from left-leaning media and bureaucratic elites.

  3. I’m not opposed to a referendum presay but it seems a bit premature no?

  4. Might there be a party in Northern Ireland that will complain about this. **D**on’t **U**der estimate **P**arochialism.

  5. I think it’s going to be a five flowers sort of situation.

Northern Ireland as it’s own microstate, Ireland and Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales).

But that’s likely decades away – and given the fuckery we’ve seen lately I’d say a slow and careful roll is best , preferably one that doesn’t sow seeds that countries like Russia can exploit.

  6. So the EU is now imposing on the legitimacy of British rule in NI?

Europe is going to eat itself alive lol

  7. I’m sure this won’t antagonize the already silly far-right in the UK and their relations towards the EU

  8. Brexit was a big turning point for eu-politics… obviously.

Ukip and similar right-pipulists elsewhere made anti-eu politics right wing.

This made The Left a pro-eu wing. That realignment doesn’t get much attention, but its consequences playing out *is the* current, EU political paradigm. It’s why r/neoliberal is left wing at present.

In Ireland, Sinne Fein were the anti-eu hard left. SF ate the party of the provisional IRA. The catholic beligerents of The Troubles who agreed a peace in 1998.

Anyway… in the Republic of Ireland, SF went from being a marginal/extremist party circa 2005 to the main opposition in the 2020s… the Irish expression of the populist wave.

Left-right works differently in Ireland and SF had traditionally been a home for both the militant left right wing and nationalist populism. “Right wing” is just too inherently protestant… for a whole bunch of historical and present reasons… to be expressed directly.

During the Brexit negotiations, EU had Ireland’s back. EU no longer played the neutral party on “border politics.” Ireland’s is an eu member in good standing and the UK was an outgoing member in poor standing. So… the EU adopted the irish demand that border matters be satisfied to their liking *before* proceeding to other matters.

The UK doesnt really care about NI so they kicked NI Unionists out of the coalition and caved to Irish demands.

Tactically this was huge. EU negotiators closed ranks and waited out Boris Johnson’s populist tactics. Ireland won.

Thia wasn’t discussed much… but… outgunning the brits in a staredown with real stakes… that meant something. EU firepower tastes good.

Meanwhile SF has the politically smartest leadership in Irish politics by a long mile. They dont exactly do primaries and suchlike… maintaining their old, secret, militant way of doing things. They strategically nominate the kind of minds delta force recruits.  Mary Lou is fierce.

The thing about Sinne Fein (and this is getting conteoversial) is that they are… or were, doctrinal revolutionaries. They will seek out the causes that have potential, in the long power game. That negotiation win is power. SF have a keen sense for power.
