Israeli army says S. Africa ‘invited’ Gazans who were flown to country • FRANCE 24 English

the spokesperson for the branch of the Israeli army that was in charge of this whole operation, that is in charge in fact of all Israeli army operations in occupied territories, all civilian operations, did confirm to me on the record that the third country involved was South Africa. And this is quite significant because what Israel is contending via this admission from the spokesperson is that South Africa invited these Gazins to come, authorized their arrival and then facing a significant backlash from the population of South Africa and civil society groups who fear that Israel is trying to perpetrate ethnic cleansing in Gaza by sending these Gazins out. backtracked and pretended not to know anything at all. So this is quite a serious uh change I would say of tone from the Israeli army. Um but many many mysteries remain including um really I mean a kind of unfathomable questions about this a group called Almaj. This is a group the group that ostensibly is operating in Gaza. One of many, by the way, there’s an entire shadowy operation now in Gaza with many ostensible humanitarian groups offering Gazins who are desperate a way out. We know that about 40,000 Gazins out of 2 million have taken advantage of these uh opportunities or people who are able to pay this. But al-maj, the group that is behind this particular group that was sent to South Africa and remember it was accompanied by the Israeli army all the way to the Baz Gaza border crossing the border into Israel and into the Ramon airport in southern Israel. So the Israeli army was well aware and cooperated with this group. The Palestinians, the Palestinian ambassador to South Africa and many Palestinian groups contend that this is in fact a front group for Israel and that it is part of an Israeli effort to empty Gaza of its population. In Israel, there’s a contrary rumor, just a rumor, and it is that Hamas, in fact, is behind this group. Either way, I have to tell you it is really uh an important an important development and something we should follow because if it’s a Hamas back group, it means the Israeli army is collaborating with Hamas. And if it’s an Israeli backed group, it means we’re really seeing a major scam perpetrated right

Israeli authorities said on Saturday that the 153 Gazans flown to South Africa earlier this week had received entry clearance from a third state before take-off. A spokesperson for the Israeli military branch overseeing the operation told FRANCE 24 that the “third country” was in fact South Africa.
