Heritage Malta has launched a new online platform giving the public unprecedented access to Malta’s national collection.

The eMuseum portal features almost 3,000 historical artefacts from Heritage Malta’s museums and reserve collections and more are expected to be added regularly.

The launch of the online platform coincided with the opening of Heritage Malta’s career fair, setting the tone for two days dedicated to showcasing the many professions and opportunities within Malta’s cultural heritage sector.

Culture Minister Owen Bonnici said eMuseum was the result of four years of “dedicated work” by curators, conservators and digitisation specialists.

“This initiative represents an important step forward in the digitisation of our cultural heritage, and will place Malta at the forefront of this field,” Bonnici said.

“Through the eMuseum, the public will not only be able to better appreciate the national collection, but will also have the opportunity to explore, study and interact with it in innovative ways, from anywhere in the world.”

The collection includes items from MUŻA – the National Community Art Museum, the Malta Maritime Museum, and the Gozo Museum of Archaeology, among others. Users can search through the artefacts by name or date, by past exhibitions, or by the museum where they are held, and can even curate their own personal collections of favourite objects.

Heritage Malta chief executive Noel Zammit said the portal opens the doors to “education, new cross-border partnerships, fresh opportunities in cultural diplomacy, and greater transparency in the way Heritage Malta cares for and interprets our country’s cultural assets.”

The career fair is being held at Heritage Malta’s headquarters at Bighi in Kalkara this weekend from 9am to 5pm.
