The Ministry of Environment of the Province of Buenos Aires resumed the Pampa Azul initiative with a provincial focus that centers development on the 1,200 kilometers of Buenos Aires coast.
The policy, originated in 2014 at the national level and later interrupted, seeks to transform scientific knowledge into concrete actions to protect the sea and the coastline.
During two days in Mar del Plata, Deputy Secretary Tamara Basteiro convened the scientific community to design the program’s roadmap.
The objective was to identify information gaps and define the central axes of an integrated environmental management for the Buenos Aires coast.

The objectives of the Pampa Azul program in Buenos Aires
“Our goal is to transform knowledge into concrete public policies that protect biodiversity, improve the quality of life in coastal towns, and generate development opportunities,” said Daniela Vilar, Minister of Environment of the Province of Buenos Aires.
The initiative articulates science, technology, communities, and public management in favor of sustainable development.
It seeks to consolidate a permanent space of cooperation between the State, science, and local communities to organize uses and prevent conflicts in the coastal strip.
The program establishes five strategic objectives for the Buenos Aires coast:
Conserve biodiversity and marine-coastal ecosystem services, identifying and protecting priority areas
Create and strengthen protected natural areas in the Buenos Aires maritime coast, ensuring their integrity and functioning
Prevent and reduce pollution through responsible waste management and circular economy strategies
Develop adaptation and mitigation plans to climate change, in response to rising sea levels and coastal erosion
Promote environmental education and governance with citizen participation, citizen science, and awareness campaigns

The environmental challenges on the Buenos Aires coast
Pampa Azul Bonaerense faces critical issues affecting the Buenos Aires coast.
Among them, coastal erosion, storms, and rising sea levels due to climate change.
