KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — About 75 A.L. Brown High School students walked out of classes Friday to protest the presence of Border Patrol agents in the Charlotte region, according to the Kannapolis Police Department.
The walkout began around noon, and students remained in the downtown area until 3 p.m. School administrators and police officers were dispatched to ensure everyone’s safety after learning of the demonstration.
Police said the majority of students were peaceful, but one arrest was made and three driving citations were issued.
Emily Cervantes Ramos, 18, of Kannapolis, was charged with assault on a government official and resisting police officers.
No injuries, weapons, or property damage were reported during the protest.
“We believe in every individual’s First Amendment rights, but if any person’s actions become illegal in situations such as these, we have no choice but to take appropriate action in order to protect the people and property of our city,” Police Chief Terry Spry said in a statement.
Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots. Â
WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.Â
