I’m not Norwegian but I live here. I’ve heard she’s a mature nice person, which is good, but I question the need for a royal family at all. They’re just basically living off people’s money, I think it’s around 300 million NOK worth of taxpayer money per year. I’m sure we can use that money somewhere else 🥴

The speach she did when she turned 18 was great. She did a good figure during her military year. She does good interviews with the media while still being firm with them (even tho she is young). Haakon and then Ingrid Alaxandra when the time is right sounds great to me, I think Norway will be better for it.
She’ll need to be strong to withstand all the shit that her family is pulling. I don’t have an opinion on her. She’s too young and sheltered to have made an impact. Time will tell. We all liked Martha too and look how she turned out….Â
I think it’s absurd that we still live in a monarchy and just by a stroke of luck don’t have a crazy lady and her shaman husband as the coming monarch and consort.

Firstly, I am French, so of course I don’t have the same right to speak as Norwegians. However, I must admit that I am quite envious of Norway’s monarchy. It’s not because I’m old-fashioned; I truly believe it’s a much better system than the French one.
Having a sovereign who is not elected is a huge advantage. The head of state can represent all Norwegians, regardless of their political views. They can act as Mother/Father of the nation in time of crisis. In France, the president is elected and will usually defend the interests of those who elected him rather than France in general.
Of course, I would also describe the presidents of Germany and Italy as fitting my ideal head of state as they are not directly elected.
Regarding the cost, the Norwegian royal family costs around 35 million per year. The French president costs around 110 million per year. Therefore, switching to a republic would not necessarily save money.
I guess at the end it depends how you do it. But from outside, I do not think it is such a bad system.

I’m not a supporter of any royal family. It’s an old outdated status, and they are just rich from getting “free” money from the people for doing nothing.
I don’t know her. My working hypothesis is that she’s just some person and that there’s nothing uniquely elevated about her to justify making her the unelected head of state, but I’m open to the possibility that I’m wrong and that she’s divinely appointed to symbolically rule

I’m fine with the royal family, as long as they represent us well. That’s basically their job at this point. Attend business conferences, environmental or geopolitical events, social events, to help improve Norway’s standing in the world and be a part of our social glue domestically.
Durek and Märtha, and Lille Marius is the opposite of anything the Royal family represents. I think they’ve spent most of our trust, so now it’s up to Crown Prince Haakon and their kids to be on the straight and narrow if they want the Royal tradition to continue in this country.
She seems fine, but I’ve heard some rumors about how she behaves at parties… let’s just hope she doesn’t go down the path of her mother or her step brother.
That said, if you’re Norwegian you should have a listen to the really brilliant podcast called Kongerekka on NRK. It’s a 1000 year story from Harald HÃ¥rfagre all the way to today. Whatever our Royal family is up to these days, it’s pretty tame compared to any other kings in the past… 🙂
As long as she doesn’t take after her mother when it comes to drug use, things should be fine. Right now the mother is the main concern, and her half-brother has turned out.. great. Her nutty aunt luckily won’t be a monarch given the current state of things. She is a total nut job.

Publicly she looks to be a decent human being, so time will show. When she reaches 30 we can probably start to expect things from her, but let kids be kids for now. She’ll have more than enough responsibility soon enough.
