Europe is known as being home to some of the world’s best and most extravagant Christmas markets. But, a surprising alpine town in Italy has placed first in a ranking of the best Christmas markets less visited by tourists.

Aosta, five hours from Florence, boasts cheap mulled wine, handcrafted gifts and a high chance of snow. The Marché Vert Noël, translated as Christmas Green Market, has been described as one of the most beautiful corners of the city. Home to the second largest collection of Roman artefacts, beaten only by Rome, the stunning architecture makes an idyllic setting for festive decorations as you enjoy a Christmas market surrounded by centuries of history.

The magic unfolds among the Roman ruins of the ancient Foro Romano, transforming the archaeological site into a magical alpine village. The historic Arch of Augustus, built in 25 BC, becomes an enchanting experience as the talking magic book tells an animated Christmas tale.

Stallholders in authentic wooden chalets proudly present an array of unique gifts, artisanal creations on display include handicraft decorations, antiques and pastries from the Aosta Valley. Local artists, who have become masters in woodcarving, transform ordinary logs into gorgeous works of art which leaves visitors mesmerised. They offer craft demonstrations, perfect for anyone looking to handmake their Christmas gifts this year.

The tree is the centrepiece of the charm with over 7,000 lights twinkling and 400 ornaments sparkling. Just a few steps away from the market, visitors can enjoy the spectacular ice skating rink. The fairytale atmosphere is best enjoyed at blue hour, moments after sunset when the sky turns a deep blue and the market lights start to sparkle.

Visitors can enjoy a glass of mulled wine for just £2.55 and Italian sausages for £4.25, making it one of the more cost-effective European getaways this winter. Hot apple cider and Fotina cheese made in Aosta Valley also go down a treat while visitors browse the local craftsmanship.

Flights from London Gatwick to Turin take less than two hours and cost around £100 for a return trip, with Aosta just an hour away. As the market runs everyday until January 6th next year, it could be the ideal destination to beat the January blues
