    Actually. Didn’t Al-Andalus pass more time as independent than a colony? It passed 60 years as part of the Umayyad Empire before becoking an independent Emirate (and later an independent Caliphate) for around 270 years, later own independent kingdoms for around 50 years before being conquered by the Almoravids –which ruled for around 60 years before being replaced by the Almohads for 80 or 90 years or so– followed by the Third Taifa Kingdoms and Granada that lasted a bit over another 250 years.
