A nice four-lane road in Dilbeek that connects Brussels with Ninove. Back in the day you could cruise along at a comfortable 90 km/h with cars that handled only half as well as today’s models. The speed limit was lowered to 70 km/h about ten years ago and that was perfectly fine. Later it was enforced with a section control system/trajectcontrole and I had no issue with that either. Set the cruise control to 70 and drive.

For years I did not see any noteworthy accidents at this location. I assume everyone respected the limit quite well and maybe even a bit too well because recently the speed was reduced again to 50 km/h.

Can someone please help me understand the purpose of this change, apart from further supporting the revenue model that Glenn Janssens seems to enjoy?

  1. It’s easier to pass than additional taxes, no parliamentary vote, no media coverage,…

  2. Just think about all the polar bears and penguins this will protect!!!!

  3. In Dendermonde I saw them placing a flitspaal. I thought, well, it’s a 70 and you shouldn’t be going any faster because it’s 300m before it turns in to a 50 zone. That’s actually a good place to put a flitspaal.

Then on the day they activated it, was the same day they placed the 50 sign to right before the flitspaal. Literally the same fucking day!

Safety my ass. It’s just to generate money.

  6. This is just a consequence of the terrible urban planning in Belgium. The problem is that this road is also trying to be a street. You cannot design a road that is both good at moving large amounts of traffic fast and also provide access to shops and houses on the side. The Netherlands realized this 50-100 years ago and planned accordingly. This is something that we’ll probably never be able to fix in Belgium. Pick one, improve traffic flow or improve safety. When safety is prioritized, they should ideally redesign the road. Proper sidewalks, narrower lanes, less lanes, chicanes, … these kind of features automatically reduce driver speed.

A redesign is obviously expensive so as a ‘temporary’ solution is to use speed camera’s or trajectcontroles. So the reason they feel scammy is because the road was initially designed for 90km/h and now they’re enforcing 50km/h. That also perfectly explains why Belgium (or Flanders) is the densest area of speed cameras in the world.

It’s disappointing that we’re stuck with this mess of an urban fabric. Every day I’m still seeing new houses being built on N roads, which is exactly the issue. And I totally agree that it’s infuriating that you’re giving €40 to a private company so the spoiled brat can be arrogant on Instagram with his flashy color Urus that papá got him for his birthday, all because you were just cruising and doing 58km/h on a road that was designed for 90…

  7. Money, tax disguised and missing off drivers in a futile and useless attempt to make them use public transports.

Also money under disguised so-called security

Edit: it seems I triggered some greens veggies. Poor souls….

  8. The speed was only reduced to 50 km/h within the urban area of Schepdaal, and let’s be honest it was about time they did that. The intersection at the tram museum has seen some bad accidents in the past, it’s quite dangerous there as to take a left turn you need to stop on the road while other traffic is whipping past you at 70 km/h from both sides. Plus there are barely sidewalks inside this section and no bike lanes, not even painted ones on the road!

Also all trajectcontroles within Dilbeek are financed and owned by the municipality itself, so no revenue going to Trafiroad here.

    Bad infrastructure.

No separation of traffic flows (cyclists, busses, cars, pedestrians). So the lazy sollution is to downgrade the road to a multipurpose road, drop the speed to the lowest common denominator and let chaos reign.

Also: the best way to block the revenue model is to stick to the speed limit.

  11. I recently got a speeding ticket based on a camera. I was kind of surprised since I don’t have the habit to go beyond the speed limits and my car is actually telling me when I do that.
The ticket had no mention of the maximum speed, neither it gave my actual speed. It just gave an approximate location of the camera.
I decided to pay my tribute of 60 EUR to the speed mafia and moved on. Going to court and wasting my time for 60 EUR?

  13. Anything over 50 would be asking to kill cyclists there.
