AND WITH SO MANY CHALLENGES THIS YEAR, MANY FAMILIES ARE THANKFUL FOR FOOD BANKS AND GIVEAWAYS JUST TO HELP PUT FOOD ON THE TABLE. THAT’S RIGHT. MANY ORGANIZATIONS AND COMMUNITY GROUPS SAY THEY FELT THE NEED TO STEP UP AND HELP. WDSU REPORTER ALYSSA GOMEZ HAS MORE ON THE HELPING HANDS. ALYSSA, HOW ARE COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN KENNER STEPPING UP THIS HOLIDAY? YEAH, WELL, THAT NEED WAS EVIDENT HERE WITH CARS STRETCHED SEVERAL BLOCKS DOWN THE STREET THIS MORNING FOR A TURKEY GIVEAWAY. COMMUNITY MEMBERS ARE REALLY TRYING TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYONE HAS A MEAL THIS THANKSGIVING, THANKS TO. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. SPIRITS WERE HIGH. A LOT OF PEOPLE WAS HAPPY AND SATISFIED. HAPPY THANKSGIVING! AS PEOPLE ROLL THROUGH THE PARKING LOT OF LITTLE ZION BAPTIST CHURCH IN KENNER, BUT VOLUNTEERS SHARED A MORE SOLEMN SENTIMENT AFTER THE MEALS QUICKLY WENT. THEY SAY THE NEED THIS YEAR IS GREATER THAN EVER. WHAT A WAY INFLATION IS RIGHT NOW. A LOT OF PEOPLE DON’T HAVE JOBS. YOU KNOW, THEY’VE BEEN LAID OFF BECAUSE OF WHAT’S GOING ON, LEADING TO THEM COMING OUT IN DROVES. TODAY. IT WAS A LITTLE OVERWHELMING. I WAS HOPING WE WOULD HAVE ENOUGH TURKEYS FOR EVERYBODY, BUT I THINK THIS TURKEY DRIVE GROWS EACH YEAR, SO IT’S A LITTLE HARDER TO ACCOMMODATE THE PEOPLE WE HAVE WITH TURKEYS THAT WE BUY IN JUST 30 MINUTES, 150 TURKEYS WERE GONE. IT’S A FRACTION OF WHAT’S BEING FELT ACROSS THE STATE. HOLIDAYS ARE AROUND THE CORNER AND PEOPLE ARE STILL RECOVERING FROM THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN, AMONG OTHER CHALLENGES. EVERYBODY COMPLAINED ABOUT THE NEEDS, THE PRICES. YOU KNOW, THE PRICES HAVE GONE SKY HIGH AND PEOPLE JUST NEED FOOD. AND RIGHT NOW THIS IS A BLESSING. LEAVING THE COMMUNITY TO FILL IN THE GAPS. A THANKSGIVING TO Y’ALL, TO THOSE ON THE RECEIVING END, SAY THEY’RE GRATEFUL FOR THEIR EFFORTS. IT’S NICE TO SEE ALL Y’ALL GETTING TOGETHER AND HELPING PEOPLE. THAT’S NICE. YOU KNOW, THAT’S WHAT WE NEED TO DO MORE OFTEN. YOU KNOW? AND THAT’S JUST WHAT THEY’RE DOING. VOLUNTEERS WILL BE BACK OUT HERE TOMORROW AT LITTLE ZION BAPTIST CHURCH, THIS TIME FOR A HOT MEAL GIVEAWAY THAT’S GOING TO BE FROM 11 TO 3 AGAIN HERE IN KENNER LIVE FROM KENNER ALYSS

Thanksgiving came early for some families in Kenner. Volunteers from Little Zion Baptist Church and Don D’aunoy’s law firm teamed up to give away more than 150 free turkeys to families in need Monday. Prior to the giveaway, cars lined up several blocks down the street, emphasizing the need in the community. Within just 30 minutes, all the donations were given away. “A lot of people don’t have jobs, they’ve been laid off because of what’s going on,” said Glenda Primus, a volunteer at the giveaway. Job loss paired with inflation and people still trying to recover from a government shutdown has put some in a tight spot this holiday season, leaving community members to fill the gaps. “Kenner, the community here, has been real good to me, so with the opportunity to join forces with the Baptist church right next to our office, it was kind of a no brainer,” said organizer and lawyer Don D’aunoy. Members will be back at Little Zion Baptist Church on Tuesday, November 25th to give away hot meals from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. According to volunteers, anyone is welcome to attend.
