New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani revealed the “weirdest” item President Donald Trump showed him while visiting the White House.
The question was asked during an episode of “The Adam Friedland Show” which aired on Monday.
Mamdani responded by saying, “I sit down, waiting for the time of the meeting, and in front of me are all of these different coffee-table books. And one of them is UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) at the White House. I had no idea, and I was just flippin’, flippin’ through that.”
When Friedland asked if Mamdani would go to the White House UFC event scheduled for June, the mayor-elect laughed and said “No.”
Following Mamdani’s meeting with Trump at the Oval Office on Friday, Mamdani was asked by reporters if he still viewed Trump as a fascist after describing the president as one during his campaign.
Before Mamdani was able to answer, Trump interjected and said “That’s OK, you can just say it. It’s easier, it’s easier than explaining it.”
The meeting saw the pair agreeing to work together to tackle the affordability crisis in New York City.
Mamdani described the meeting as “productive,” while Trump went as far as saying he thinks Mamdani “is going to be doing some things that are really great” after previously threatening to pull federal funding from the city should Mamdani be elected.
Mamdani told NBC News that he specifically used his time to speak for New Yorkers who voted for Trump in 2024 to find common ground on economic issues.
“I shared with the president that when I asked those New Yorkers why did they vote for the president, they told me again and again, it was cost of living, cost of living, cost of living,” the mayor-elect said. “And when the president and I were speaking, we were speaking about what is preventing [us] from delivering on that affordability agenda.”
Mamdani also told the media outlet that he addressed the president directly about his threats to deploy the National Guard to New York City.
“What I told him is that what separates New York City from anywhere else in the country is we have the NYPD, and I trust the NYPD to deliver public safety, and to me, that is something that I know that they can do, that they have done, and they will continue to do under my leadership,” he said.
