Trump had imposed a 50% tariff on all Brazilian products as a way to pressure the Brazilian Supreme Court to release Bolsonaro. That approach has failed spectacularly. Bolsonaro has been convicted and today started serving his sentence. Meanwhile, facing growing inflationary pressures, Trump has walked back most of the tariffs he imposed on Brazil without getting one single concession out in return.

This outcome not only demonstrates the resilience of Brazil's public institutions, but also the limits of the US political/economical influence that Trump assumed to be near limitless.

  1. I mean, even Trump knows you don’t mess with an ankle tag.

    That’s just dumb.

More seriously, is this the first time a military officer in Brazil’s history has been imprisoned for coup-like behaviour?
