New Zealand is making a significant move to address workforce shortages and enhance the growth of its business events sector with the introduction of ‘Te Haeata,’ the nation’s first-ever online vocational qualification specifically designed for the industry. Launched at the BEIA (Business Events Industry Aotearoa) Conference 2025 in Auckland, the New Zealand Certificate in Business Events aims to upskill workers and prepare them for the demands of an expanding events landscape, ensuring that the country continues to be a global leader in tourism and business events.

A Strategic Partnership for Industry Growth

Te Haeata is the result of a unique collaboration between BEIA, Ringa Hora, Service IQ, and Grow Tourism, with significant contributions from industry experts. The programme has been designed to address the ongoing shortage of skilled professionals within the business events sector, offering a comprehensive pathway for individuals to gain the specialized skills required to succeed in the fast-evolving industry.

The launch of Te Haeata was announced by the Minister for Tourism and Hospitality, who reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investing in the workforce that will drive New Zealand’s future success in the events industry. To support the initiative, the government has allocated $145,000 from the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy to help fund the programme’s design, development, and online delivery over the coming 12 months.

Crafting a Tailored Education Programme

Verified by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), Te Haeata aligns with the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework, ensuring that it meets the rigorous standards needed to support professional growth within the business events industry. Administered by BEIA, the qualification will evolve in response to industry needs and trends, ensuring that it remains relevant and provides up-to-date training for both newcomers and experienced professionals.

This qualification was developed with a focus on the practical skills required by the business events sector, bringing together the expertise of seasoned professionals who understand the challenges and opportunities that exist in event management. With its clear focus on career development, Te Haeata opens doors for those already working in tourism and hospitality to transition into the business events sector, while also equipping new talent with the tools needed to thrive.

Designed for Industry Expansion and Sustainability

The Te Haeata programme aims to enrol 200 learners within its first 18 months, with a projected 50 additional learners each year. The first module is scheduled to be available by February/March 2026, with further modules being released over the following months. This gradual rollout ensures that learners can progress through the qualification at a manageable pace while making it accessible to a broad range of people, from those just starting their careers to those looking to upskill.

Te Haeata will also be introduced to secondary schools in 2027, providing students with an opportunity to explore the business events industry and learn about the key skills required in event management. This early exposure to the sector will help attract young talent, paving the way for the next generation of skilled professionals.

According to recent findings from BEIA and Ringa Hora, over 70% of business events organizations predict that demand for events will continue to rise, requiring increased recruitment, especially in roles like event coordinators. As the sector expands, the need for qualified professionals grows, and Te Haeata is poised to address this demand, equipping the workforce with the skills and confidence needed to take on these roles.

Solving the Talent Shortage in the Events Sector

The business events sector in New Zealand faces a persistent challenge: the shortage of skilled workers. As the industry continues to expand, finding qualified professionals has become increasingly difficult. Te Haeata responds directly to this challenge by offering a comprehensive training programme that equips individuals with the knowledge and hands-on experience necessary to excel in event management.

Through the provision of high-quality, industry-recognized training, Te Haeata ensures that the sector will have a reliable pipeline of talent capable of managing and delivering world-class events. This investment in workforce development will not only support the growth of the sector but also enhance New Zealand’s reputation as a top destination for international business events and conferences.

Shaping the Future of New Zealand’s Business Events Sector

Te Haeata is more than just a training programme—it is a vital step toward securing the future of New Zealand’s business events industry. As the demand for skilled professionals continues to grow, this qualification will help build a sustainable workforce that can meet the evolving needs of the sector. By fostering professional development and offering structured career pathways, Te Haeata will empower individuals to contribute to the continued success and growth of the business events sector.

The programme is expected to play a crucial role in New Zealand’s strategy to remain a leading destination for international conferences, conventions, and business events. With the support of the government, industry leaders, and key stakeholders, Te Haeata will provide the foundation for a thriving, skilled workforce that is prepared to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing global events industry.

In the years to come, Te Haeata will not only help fill critical roles within the business events sector but also ensure that New Zealand’s tourism and hospitality industries continue to flourish, driving economic growth and creating exceptional experiences for visitors from around the world.
