  1. I don’t care if you like Meghan or not, tabloids spreading these rumors without getting confirmation from The Cut is nasty work.

  2. During her time as a working royal, Meghan — like all members of the British royal family — [was not permitted to accept clothing for free](https://people.com/royals/meghan-markles-royal-wardrobe-heres-who-pays-for-it-and-why-she-cant-accept-free-clothes/). In the months leading up to her 2018 wedding, she paid for her wardrobe herself, **and afterward received a clothing budget for official engagements that was covered by then–**[**Prince Charles**](https://people.com/person/king-charles-iii/) **— the standard arrangement for working royals at the time.**

Nice to finally have confirmation for this, since a lot of her fans claimed that she didn’t receive an allowance like the other family members and paid for her working royal wardrobe herself!

Edit to add that in Spare Harry confirmed that Meghan was taking freebies and sharing it with staff, so it’s interesting to see them admit that working royals aren’t allowed to.

  3. I’m not a fan of Meghan’s but I think it’s pretty damn crappy to accuse her of stealing a dress

  4. > A spokesperson for the Duchess of Sussex is pushing back on a report that she took a designer dress from a 2022 photo shoot

Having read the article, it doesn’t seem that the spokesperson is refuting the fact that she took home a dress from the photoshoot (nor do they refute the claim that she didn’t pay for it) — but rather they are clarifying that it was taken knowingly/with permission vs. the narrative that it was some type of theft.

Absolutely a key distinction between the two scenarios; just clarifying that the spokesperson wasn’t claiming that the whole scenario was made up from top to bottom.

  5. I thought this was an odd article because it seems to building on an old story where Meghan supposedly stole designer shoes from a photo shoot for a Canadian department store. And supposedly those are the shoes she wore in her engagement photo call.

And reading between the lines, her spokesperson doesn’t refute that Meghan took the dress. Who benefits from putting a rumor like this out there? It is definitely someone involved with that project or a “friend of”. Either way, people in Hollywood are out to get her. It seems mean though to make her look like a thief if she isn’t one.

  6. Her PR team are extremely slow, like snail pace slow. They are so slow to react that the British tabloid press had the time to find another dress she wore in a photoshoot (the black strapless Chanel dress) and claim she also stole that because she wore it in New York.

  7. “According to a source familiar with industry practices, it’s standard for talent to retain select items from photo shoots — sometimes for security reasons, including to prevent potential resale or unauthorized auction. Clothing worn by members of the royal family and other public figures has been targeted for resale in the past, making the practice both common and precautionary.”

😂😂😂😂 according to a “source familiar with industry practices…”

And who, precisely, would be commenting on this article who is “familiar with industry practices” but isn’t specifically named? LOLOL might that be Meghan herself? Who else would provide this information on background and demand to not be named?

  8. I think people would surprised how much people wanna tell the press.

I remember I was at a conference with my husband and I got bored and went to the bar. This guy from some paper was outside the event hall and was extremely nice. Trying to get information out of me but also acting like my new bff.
I went back inside. When I came out the press guy was surrounded by like 5 people practically begging to give information about whatever he wanted.

I think people feel important if they can talk to the press as an anonymous source.

    The conversations also go like

Press:” I heard Meghan stole a Rolex and Hermes bag off the set of a shoot”

Anonymous source “idk about that but I think she might have taken a dress once but a Rolex sounds crazy”

They will take out everything you said except she took a dress.

  9. Anyone who believes she stole dresses that she then wore again very publicly needs their head examined.

  10. All this crap constantly about her in the media, and she still wants to be famous??

  11. She was probably given it. I’ve done small time commercial modelling and when I said I liked some item I’d worn in the shoot they let me have it. I doubt she stole it.

  12. Who’d even want it if its that hideous red dress? So unflattering with the squishy bosom cups and v cut.

I appreciate that she donates some money to needy causes etc, that’s cool, but her fashion sense? Mercy. Honey, your pants are always too long and you don’t need to expose your shoulders in every outfit to look young.

  13. This is all a calculated ploy to undermine Meghan to the lowest level by the British press.

  14. Reading the comments it seems both meghan fans and meghan detractors seem to both work in marketing and press but both are disagreeing on what the protocol is for ‘sources’ and ‘on the record’ quotes.

But the easiest answer is the brands and celebs will pick whichever one serves their narrative. Its obvious that this article regardless of who was contacted was meant to refute the stealing claims but admit she took the dress. Whether the ‘source’ or the ‘on the record’ person is her team is not really relevant.

  15. Wow. Accusing a black woman of stealing. Stay classy everyone.

  16. Where did this story first came from? I thought it was some idle gossip that almost no one gives credit to
