The Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ExxonMobil Egypt to enhance risk management, operational safety, and training across Egypt’s fuel transportation and distribution system.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoPMR), the MoU was signed in a meeting attended by Salah Abdel Kerim, EGPC Chairman, and Sherif Serag El Din, ExxonMobil Egypt’s Vice Chairman and Managing Director.
Under the MoU, ExxonMobil Egypt will provide technical expertise in risk assessment, operational safety and specialized capacity-building programs for EGPC subsidiaries’ personnel responsible for the transport and distribution of petroleum products.
During the meeting, Abdel Kerim affirmed the EGPC’s commitment to achieving world-class standards in handling and transporting petroleum products. Furthermore, he noted that EGPC is working diligently to elevate its network performance to match global benchmarks. “We have the expertise and partnerships needed to reach international performance levels,” Abdel-Karim said, emphasizing that competition within the market drives excellence.
Abdel Kerim also highlighted EGPC’s openness to further cooperation with both national and international partners to modernize the petroleum product transportation system and improve storage facilities to ensure the highest levels of safety and operational integrity.
Serag El Din of ExxonMobil Egypt expressed pride in the robustness of Egypt’s current fuel distribution system and the ongoing improvements in storage facilities. He added that the new agreement is a direct result of the Ministry of Petroleum’s open dialogue approach with its partners, including recommendations of the sector workshop held in Alexandria in September.
Serag El Din further stressed the importance of reviving river transport for petroleum products, describing it as essential to reducing road congestion caused by tanker trucks. It will also support government efforts to improve road safety—a key recommendation from the Alexandria workshop.
Recently, ExxonMobil signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) to expand the former’s natural gas exploration activities in the Mediterranean Sea.
