Weather alerts have been issued across large parts of Latvia with freezing rain and thick ice creating slippery and treacherous conditions.

As the freezing rain continues, very heavy ice is expected to form on roads, streets, wires, tree branches, and other surfaces. Consequently, the Latvian Center for Environment, Geology and Meteorology (LVĢMC) and the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) have issued an orange warning (danger) for Vidzeme region and a yellow warning (potential danger) for much of the rest of the country with the exception of western Kurzeme and south-eastern Latgale, where conditions may not be so severe.

Transport movement on roads and railways, as well as pedestrian movement and other outdoor activities are likely to be difficult. Drivers are urged to drive with extreme caution if journeys are unavoidable and railway passengers should check that their departures have not been affected, particularly on routes using electric rather than diesel-powered trains.

Heavy icing on wires may affect electricity supplies. Alert messages have been sent to mobile phones in affected areas.
