  1. >Under SAFE, third countries can account for a maximum of 35 percent of the value of a weapons system paid for by the scheme; Canada will be able to have a larger share but it will have to pay a fee “commensurate with the benefits the Partner Country and its entities are expected to derive,” factoring in GDP, industrial competitiveness and the depth of cooperation with European manufacturers.

It will be interesting to see what larger % share has Canada negotiated and what is the fees they have agreed to pay….

  2. Yay! Stable allies with leaders that dont declare tradewars bases on vibes or resort to extorting other allies.

  3. As a Canadian tell me how I should feel, are we wasting money again?

  4. Hilarious that they shot the UK down and let the canadians in.

  5. This article does not tell how much money Canada is paying for the Europe’s €150B SAFE defense scheme?

    ### EU and UK

    – EU asked UK to pay €4.5 billion to €6.5 billion.
    – U.K. proposed a much lower figure of €200 million to €300 million. Citing the deal had to be good value for money for British taxpayers.

That’s how the deal didn’t went through between UK and EU.

  6. So Canada will be buying French fight jets and German tanks from now on …..

  7. At this rate, Canada is really gonna join the EU before the UK comes back

  8. Canada should just join the EU already. We share a lot of values and culture; they could use our resources and we could use their business and technology (I also like their standards for food and tech), and it would add a healthy dose of french people to pacify Quebec.

  9. I haven’t read the article, but I already know it won’t reveal how much Canda is paying for access. If the EU were to reveal how much canada is paying, it would be clear to everyone that the UK is getting offered a terrible deal. The EU wants the UK to fail, so no other country leaves the EU.

I can guarantee that the EU will make sure the fee Canada is paying will never be revealed publicly.

  10. So…we do our utmost to keep the Brits out of SAFE, after spending billions on projects developed together, but let the Canadians in, which are more integrated with the US mil-tech industry. Furthermore, we allow them to spend $$$ to reduce the European share in their deals that will be part of SAFE.

Looks to me like we give actual competition, in terms of mil-tech systems with relatively little European share, discounted access to SAFE, while we keep a long-standing traditional development partner out just to spite them. Don’t understand me wrong, its great that Canada participates, but how did we get to a point where we get Canada in but a long-standing industrial partner with more tech, more army, more bucks to spend, out?

Get both Canada and UK in ASAP. I don’t wanna limit our defense capabilities and waste money just so the French can stick it to the Brits.

Edit: Honestly, of all the political topics where we can piss the Brits off, this might be the dumbest one. Not only they actually are, besides the currently untrustworthy US, the only third party that already proved intent to defend us for decades, they are (besides NATO obligations) also the only third party that is contractually bound to defend an EU member (Ireland). This is one of the few issues where the Brits actually deserve preferential treatment, because they already put in work for our common interests beyond their individual needs. Also Russia dgaf whether UK was mean to us, or not. Any lack of capability and any disunity will be used by them against us. There is no leverage any side has to stick it to the other, since not maximizing our defensive potential is detrimental to both UK and EU. Only short-sighted politicians hoping to squeeze out more deals for local industry may believe otherwise.

  11. Britain clearly getting terrible deals to punish us for daring to leave the union are giving remainers such as myself fatigue. Message received loud and clear

  12. “clinches” should not be so visually similar to “diches”. Am I the only one who misread it?

  13. Why do they call it a “scheme”? Sounds shady when worded like that.

  14. Since nothing conclusive seems to come out with the United Kingdom, we might as well turn to Canada which shows a real interest. I hope to see more agreements between France and Quebec on this occasion.

  15. I understand that Americans have a way of saying things, different phrasing than the Europeans but whenever I hear the term “scheme” it has a negative connotation to my American ears
