Dominican Republic allows US access in anti-drug fight • FRANCE 24 English

Washington has found a willing ally in its Caribbean war on drugs. For a limited time, the Dominican Republic will allow the US to use an air base and airport to support its controversial operation against alleged traffickers. And I want those watching who see the narotist drug boats blowing up to understand that we’re deadly serious about this mission. The goal is clear. To strengthen the air and sea protection of our armed forces, a decisive reinforcement to avoid the entry of narcotics and to hit transnational organized crime with more power. Since September, the Pentagon has deployed a massive naval force to the region and used air strikes to destroy more than 20 small boats, killing more than 80 people. Experts see it as part of an attempt to pressure Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro into stepping down. Last week, Reuters reported two anonymous US officials as saying that covert operations against Maduro would likely be the first part of a new action against him. The US has designated Maduro as the head of a drug cartel and floated the possibility of direct strikes on Venezuelan soil. In an apparent attempt to shrug off the threats and show life going on as normal, Maduro posted a video of himself driving a car through the streets of Caracus. Maduro insists there’s no drug cultivation in Venezuela, which he says is used as a trafficking route against its will.

The president of the Dominican Republic says he has authorized the US government to operate inside restricted areas in the Caribbean country to help in its fight against drug trafficking.

  5. At least two drug fast boat arrive at the DR coast weekly, Dominican cities have become unrecognizable due to drug addiction.

    The cost of counter drugs operation is estimated to be over 100 millions annually.

    I guess that’s ok.

  7. Dominican Republic has so many poor people and it amazes me how all those rich baseball players don’t do anything about their own people. Bragging about their wealth on Fox sports and their country having so many issues. Country only produces drug dealers and ratchet behavior ✌️ I’ll take my American money elsewhere

  15. Let's be serious, everyone wants Venezuela's oil. DR teamed up with the real enemy to get in on the oil if Venezuela comes crashing down. The Caribbean/Central America doesn't really have issues with drugs the way they're making it seem.

The president is only days away from goin in,but we neded the dominican republic to participate with the air base and the naval strategic port in causedo because we neded thw destroyers to have a second naval facility for quick repairs and rearmament in case Ceiba is hit with russian misisels.
