South Korea offers to build five Aegis destroyers per year to help the US counter China at sea

1. South Korea has the world’s second largest shipbuilding industry. They are offering the US to build 5 Aegis destroyers per year, which would be a huge boost since the US only produces 2 per year. The cost would also likely be cheaper than producing them in the US. And the quality would be on par. 

2. Wow given how awful the U.S. is at building warships in a timely or cost competitive manner, this would be an incredible deal if it could be worked out

3. Not much of a choice given how small US ship building capacity is

4. A pretty great example of why it’s great to have alliances.

5. Would be a good policy in the short term so long as there was a medium to long term goal to improve US shipbuilding.

6. The kingdoms on the Korean Peninsula were always the master shipbuilders of Asia in the age of sail, such that they were often recruited to build warships for other empires (such as the Mongol empire).

   History doesn’t repeat but it rhymes.
