That’s kind of a good news, bad news situation. Good news is where Europe and Canada and others are stepping up but also the bad news is that this is required because of how far the US has fallen under Trump. Also that level of funding is short of what Ukraine is going to need in total. The hole that the US left by stepping away from directly helping Ukraine is not only going to be hard to fill, but also takes away the ability of the Trump administration to even try to end the war early. No direct aid means less soft power, which means Zelensky is more likely to tell Trump to fuck off even if the US supported proposals wasn’t complete garbage.
He can’t have it both ways. If he wants Europe to handle aid to Ukraine then they should also be handling peace negotiations. Keeping them from even having a seat on the table is a garbage way to even approach this. Hopefully if/when Ukraine wins the war with increasing support from the West it will redefine the power relationship between the US and the rest of NATO so that the latter doesn’t feel it has to put up with this bullshit from the US.
The guys decided to throw a few more loans at Ukraine’s departing war train. Do they know Ukraine won’t be able to repay them? Of course. But then they could issue another loan to cover the debt. And then another loan secured by land and a certain economic policy. And so on.
What fine fellows.
