It seems a can of worms has been opened with renaming places & buildings..
how do we put the lid back on?
Surely more important thing to be working on.
Jesus fuck
Well this is the thing, you can’t go on about renaming a tiny park but ignore street names like Nassau Street, Wellington Quay, Queen Street, King Street etc
Calls from who? Sound like a cooked up sinario to subtract credibility from zionist fucktards that are annoyed about the inevitability of Herzog park being renamed one way or another.
Utterly ludicrous, almost Stalinist.
We laughed at the Yanks and Brits over this shite and here we are.
If you’re offended by the name of a street or park you are the problem, morons.
Can open, worms everywhere; what a collosal waste of time and resources this would prove to be once the extent of the “not Irish” names was revealed. A non controversy, now elongated by those with nothing but time and ideology to waste.
> Could we rename like Beresford Place there where Liberty Hall is? Surely that should be called Connolly Place after James Connolly with the statue [across the road]
This could lead to a lot of visitors to Dublin missing their trains, I reckon.
More valuable time wasted on non matters.
Does Irish history now start in 1921?
There are still a handful of roads here with Cromwells name in them. He basically killed a quarter of all Irish people that lived in Ireland at that time.
The problem here is we don’t fucking name any street after anything other than revolutionary leaders or dead poets and writers and even the later is rare nowadays. You will get “the Park”, “the Crescent” “Seven Oaks” or whatever as street names for half of fucking Dublin and yet you can’t have “Rory Gallagher street” or “Van Morrison Way”, I’d take “Damien Rice Road” over whatever the fuck soulless fucking street name they make next. The rules on street names require that they have local or historical importance, I’d think some of the names of stuff pre-Independence has a lot more relevance than calling an estate “Mariner’s Point”. Why are we fucking allergic to celebrating anyone who has done fucking anything in the last 100 years. I’d take a school named after Bono than the 1000th fucking primary school called “St Brigid’s National School”.
“History is a symptom of our disease.”
Don’t see the point of all this. Seems like a bunch of people with little time on their hands.
Meh. We’ll go through cycles of this when peope’s attention gets drawn to it and someone gets a bee in their bonnet to push for change because they decided they don’t like the image or association a name has.
Dun Laoghaire is no longer Kingstown, we still have Westmoreland street.
Montgomery Street that was is now Foley Street; Gloucester Street is Sean McDermott street.
The corpo broke their own rules by naming a park after a person to begin with, so the park name change proposal is an easier sell if they focused on that.
Demanding completion or “consistency” on “decolonizing” place names that reflect the history of a place that experienced centuries of colonial rule is silly both as a goal and as a rhetorical blocker for a requested place name change.
I love Herzogs films and documentaries. I never knew he was so divisive.
Oh great, the quest for purity has re-opened. Someone take in the statues outside the Shelbourne again.
Just leave the street names as they are. Nobody gives a fuck about this!
If you’re going to “cancel” the Duke of Wellington in Ireland, you also need to rename the Shelbourne Hotel. Both Wellington and Shelbourne were born in Ireland, but served in the British Army.
PS wait till they find out what “RDS” is short for ..!
Oh fuck off. Jesus wept rename half the city then? I swear to God it’s like everything revolves around the same opinions you would hear at a student union politics meeting. Like is there actually anyone who is pissed off at the fact Dublin has British street names? Is that actually something that goes through peoples heads on the regular?
There is only a debate amongst those with too much time on their hands for idle thought. Of all the issues Dublin is facing, and this lot are worried about street names.
Fucking ridiculousness and overreaching from both the left and the right. These motions and acts cost a lot of taxpayer money. Tens of thousands is spent on this shit for zero good reasons. We have a Shalom park in Cork, should we rename that too? Who gives a shit what the name of the place is.
Years ago I lived in South Africa. There was a cliff ridge the neighbours called “Mzilikazi’s Krantz”. Mzilikazi was Shaka Zulu’s genocidal general. His name literally makes people shudder still.
I asked one of the neighbours, a Tswana woman, how she felt about their version of Cromwell being commemorated. She said it was important. The kids ask about the name and the stories of the Zulu conquest live on.
There’s a Cromwell’s bridge not far from.my house and I often think about it. The mass murder and cultural genocide and death of our true culture. The name doesn’t make me want to lionize him. But it is a powerful name.
I think some people of a certain political stripe assume they can control culture and how it evolves by erasing the “bad” (not trendy) parts of history. They use cherry picked history as a political manipulation tool.
Its a mistake to assume every commemoration is a commendation.
Fuck this guy whoever he is.
What will we rename Buckingham Street in D1..?
Hutch Heights, perhaps?
A lot of people don’t realise that all the train stations named after 1916 figures didn’t become that until there was a wave of re naming around the 50th anniversary. It didn’t cause the country to crumble and I think the station names are liked by most people. Why not rename streets/parks etc? The only reason there’s a lot of streets etc named after aristocrats or monarchs is that the aristocrats owned and built those streets or because local councils were boot licking the current king/Queen. If we still did that we’d have shit like BAM Avenue.
People get over changes. They’re our streets, we ought to name them how we like in a democratic and thought out manner.
Can we ‘remove’ the thought police left winger zealots who suggested this, from our country?
Dublin was a city founded by norsemen who raped and pillaged. burn the place to the ground /s
where do you stop…
Couldn’t we just learn from these things? We can teach history instead of erasing it.
It was named after X because public perception at the time was Y, it later turned out X was actually a massive Z.
If we get into this it’ll be endless performative outrage. Just leave them alone.
Keep em, they are a part of our history and we are apart of the history or empire, both of it’s advancement/administration and of it’s downfall.
To pretend otherwise is pure simple carry on.
If we’re looking for shitty historical comemmorations to get rid of, how about the Confederate (in the American sense) monument in Tuam?
Absolutely psychotic that we have something like that here, just because the guy it’s of happened to have been born in the town.
It was put up in fucking **1998**!
For god sake. Make it stop.
Corks Victorian quarter…
More things to waste money on.
Politicians have time for everything except for solving the problems that have been plaguing this country for years.
Let’s scrub everything from 11th century to 1921 from our cultural history. Then go up North and force unification under those terms. Clowns
Rename Everything and Everyone!!!
Every street gets a new name……every person gets a new name!
Brace yourselves, the fadas are coming
If they couldn’t rename Herzog on a legal basis how can they rename others?
We need to then remove the statue of Seán Russell he was after all a Nazi collaborator
Brilliant… just brilliant… the best use of energy
Let’s stick our heads in the clouds and pretend nothing ever happened.
Lads the country is burning around us, we can’t afford a gaf, a weeks shopping or a poxy night out but this nonsense gets talked about. Pick your battles ffs
AH no not this s**t again.. I thought we put this to bed when we stopped calling our largest outdoor rollercoaster park in co meath after a food item which caused a major famine.. Back then I was totally onboard with removing the name and replacing it with something more normal..
I think this problem can be solved by adding trigger warning announcements in goggle maps direction announcements…
The Plunkett family who built Ballsbridge were constrained to name all their roads after English men. So they did, except they were all disgraced. Elgin marbles, Raglan ordered the charge of the Light Brigade. Check the names and all had a scandal associated with them. Interesting piece of history that should be retained and could be perversely used in the future.
Can we not just leave things, the fuck, alone. We are surrounded by whispers of our past, it connects us to it and is a key to understanding who we are and where we come from. The good bits and the bad bits. Whitewashing those away to suit the moment’s prevailing sentiment denies a part of our own story.
This is so 2020.
Obviously the only solution is to give each road a QR code that you scan to provide you with a random alphanumeric string, and hope and pray that QRs, letters or numbers don’t become problematic. I’m looking forward to living on jrY8lWjEmS))EI<u68Y{ Street.
Would they ever just fuck off and do some real work
