  1. If Xi made overtures to Trump and played his ego like Putin does, Taiwan would be in the same position as Ukraine.

  2. How much flattery did the Japanese PM give him to sign this?

  3. How is it that 💩can legislate Taiwan, or close Venezuelan air space, or pardon Bibi ?

  4. I mean the more Sovereignty taiwan gains the better, but does it acually hinder xi’s ambitions in any way shape or form, I think not.

  5. He will just issue an EO removing this as soon as it suits him

  6. These comments by China and Taiwan are both pretty generic and banal yet Reuters turned it into some emotional driven ragebait in their headline.

  7. Trump will need to play this very carefully if he wants Jackie Chan to sign on to Rush Hour 4.

  8. It is still a… What is the term… Paper Tiger. It’s not like he signed an arms and support law, that you can’t trust trump would honor anyway.

  9. Not a fan of Trump at all but if this helps keep Taiwan sovereign and safe from China I’m all for
It and glad to see it.

  10. The non-paywalled article was already posted, so I’ll post the bill itself. [https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/1512/text](https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/1512/text)

Blessedly short, it changes the previous policy which ordered a one-off State Department review of relations to Taiwan to instead be conducted every two years instead. The reports basically are to check that Taiwan is still a democracy and to prepare to lift the current restrictions on relations with Taiwan.

  11. Taiwan is lucky that China is someone Trump actively beefs with.

  12. AI Bullet points on article:

The Taiwan Assurance Implementation Act was signed into law on Dec. 2, 2025 by Donald Trump, requiring the U.S. State Department to regularly (every five years) review and update guidelines on how the United States officially interacts with Taipei (Taiwan).
    Reuters

The law is seen in Taiwan as a strong signal of U.S. support — described as a reaffirmation of shared democratic values and backing closer unofficial Taiwan–U.S. ties.

Taiwan’s Foreign Minister said the new law could allow Taiwanese officials broader access to U.S. federal agencies and potentially more official engagements — even though it does not guarantee such contact.
    Reuters

Beijing strongly condemned the legislation: China’s foreign ministry called Taiwan “the Taiwan region of China,” warned the U.S. to stop official interactions with Taipei, and criticized any moves seen as encouraging “Taiwan independence.”

The move further strains already tense Sino-U.S. relations — coming months after earlier U.S. moves easing restrictions on U.S.–Taiwan official contacts.
