London, 1946.

  1. Someone showed a 1920s one earlier that was amazing, too. One thing really struck me from this one: no road markings! I’d clocked the people and vehicles moving almost in a shared space of the road in the previous one, and obviously there are a lot more cars and buses in this one. But all navigating with no lines at all. Amazing.

  2. The streets look so clean.

I can imagine there was a fair amount of post war repair and resurfacing.

The reduced amount of street furniture and road markings is stark

  3. Andrews salts and ex lax. That’s one hell of a backed up omnibus

  4. Just insane to think that my grandad was in his late twenties when this was filmed and lived long enough to own and understand an iPhone.

  5. Cue the deluge of white nationalists in the comment section in 3, 2, 1…

  6. And all this just one year after the war ended? Simply amazing!

  7. That guy on the first screen in the black suit, stands out. You could imagine seeing him now dressed exactly the same.

  8. Crazy that London recently after ww2 looks better than now.

  9. Sure this footage is from 1946? London had extensive bomb damage in 1946 with loads of rubble still to be cleared and whole areas flattened

  10. Look how civil everybody was when moving around. Now look at today’s London.

  11. Too much motor traffic even back then. Our city desperately needs a revolution in public transportation in my humble opinion.

  12. Leaded petrol and cigarettes everywhere

    The horror, the horror.

  13. Nice video, but it’s missing also a lot of bombed out areas of London at that time.

  14. It’s missing diversity and facial recognition police vans

  15. Funny how the pedestrians and the drivers don’t need the dreadful street ‘furniture’ or childish painted roadsides we have to contend with today, to navigate the city. Makes a mockery of all the councils in the country. They must think we’re all stupid.

  16. Looks far better than the London of today. Not a bit of litter, patchwork roads or weeds to be seen.

  17. If you like old videos, there’s a game called [The Great When?](https://www.monkeon.co.uk/the-great-when/) – where it’ll give you 5 videos of London and you have to guess the year. It’s strangely addictive, although you do occasionally get the same one pop back up.

  18. looks more like the 30s. those cars aren’t 40s cars.
