A man in the Slovenian city of Velenje beheaded a bronze statue of Josip Broz Tito overnight, reports say. RTV Slovenia.
“We condemn the vandalism that was committed at night on Tito Square in Velenje, where the perpetrator damaged the Tito monument and beheaded him,” the Velenje city administration announced.
They said they will repair the damage to the 6-meter-high statue of famous sculptor Antun Augustincic as soon as possible and ensure that it is returned to its original condition.
Tito’s severed head was found in the trunk of a Skoda Kodiaq, owned by a 49-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of vandalism.
The vehicle reportedly had two different Croatian license plates, but the suspect is a Slovenian citizen from the Velenje area, a town once called Titovo Velenje.
The city strongly condemned the beheading, stating that in Velenje “there is no place for vandalism and attacks on cultural and historical heritage.”
Mayor Peter Dermol said it was a shameful act. /Telegraph/
