Another north Michigan post for r/Finland 🇫🇮
Some of us here really do make a consistent effort to keep traditions alive by language and food and music, and it’s fun to connect with the home country here on Reddit, I hope it’s not a bother and finds you guys well.
My wife and I love cooking Finnish foods together and sharing them with friends and family who’ve never tried Finnish food before.

Crimping technique needs a little work but then again, a lot of natives aren’t exactly masters at it.
Why do Americans use disposable kitchenware so much?
Rating the looks of your cookings
Soup 10/10
Blueberry pie 7/10
Karelian pastries 5/10
I’m sure they tasted wonderful though 🙂
I bet you are going to get many comments about those karelian pies, and I bet many of the commenters have never made them themselves! Thats a respectable attempt and I bet they were amazing. Lohikeitto is one of my own favorites, looks delicious!
Are your roots in Finland?
Looks good. By making Karelian pies yourself, you’re probably ahead of most Finns. I personally just buy them pre-made, frozen, and just heat them in the oven. Remember to eat them with egg-butter spread (or whatever “munavoi” is in English).
I use to live in MI, and really regret that did not visit relatives and Finnish places, while in there.
Salmon stew. I love it.

I will raise your lohikeitto with our lohikeitto.
Nam
Looks great! It’s been too long singe I had proper blueperry pie, now I want some!
Gratz, you just made the only 3 good dishes in finnish cuisine 😂
looks great!
We typically use mustikka (bilberry) for the pie, smaller wild grown variant of blueberry. Do you have those available in Michigan?
Reheat the karelian pies in an airfryer, just a little bit of butter or oil on top, high heat for a couple of minutes or so. Trust me, it’s yummy!
I recently made lohikeitto for a class potluck at my uni! I live in North Carolina so it was a very unusual dish for my classmates. They loved it though! I really want to try making karjalanpiirakka soon.
They all look and surely taste great👏 How has you friends & family liked Finnish foods?
Näyttää hyvältä! Great job! Bet tasted awesome
Looks good. I like Michigan.
Those kajalanpiirakka look like the ones I made when I made them first time. Absolutely crusty, though no doubt delicious.
Pinching the dough correctly is a process and a half and takes a surprising amount of finger dexterity.
Thats a fantastic looking lohikeitto and the rahkamustikkapiirakka is looking good as well. Despite the fact that you did use blueberries instead of bilberries. Though I imagine getting European variety is a big tough across the big pond.
Ooh, very good! My attempt at karjalanpirakka got the shape more right, but uh… definitely needs work on the actual pastry recipe.
That salmon soup looks great
What are we looking at for the 3 different food items?
I’m going to need a recipe for picture 2. That looks delicious
noi näyttää nii hyvilt. kannattaa laittaa karjalan piirakoiden päälle sitö muna juttua.
Ihana kainuulainen kalakeitto!😍
Your Karelian pasties might benefit of a butter wash. If you continue with the open variant, it might be better to do with brush when the pasties are still hot from the oven, if you shift towards more closed variant, it can be done by dipping the hot pasties to butter/water mix (~70/30%), (some traditions prefer milk over water, but I think the water looks nicer, warm milk might start fibreing up). Great work!
The karelian pies bring back my 2008 exchange student year in Tampere. Used to eat them for breakfast at my (back then) gf place
That salmon soup looks goooooood
“music” it better be metal or iskelmä lol
Lmao the pie with the giant blueberries looks goofy, the salmon soup looks so good tho
Salmon soup look delicious.
Blueberrypie would be more Finnish if made with European bilberries (fin, Kangasmustikka/ forest blueberry) but i’ll allow blueberries (fin, Pensasmustikka/ bush blueberry) if former is not widely available in states. Bilberry has more flavor and are juicier than blueberries so i prefer bilberries but blueberry is good enough substitue for pie
Karelian pie: taste is what matters nobody gets them right at first try. Source: i work in bakery.
This is spot on from my view point… I look forward to a future post that may include some Christmas Pulla!
Greetings from SW Ontario 🇨🇦🇫🇮
Love making Lohikeitto. I’m in central Canada and find it’s such a great comfort food in the winter.
My wife and I are obsessed with the Karjalanpiirakka we had while in Suomi, but I haven’t been able to master the crimping technique when attempting to make them at home! So onnea to you for doing much better than we did 😂😂
Terve from NYC! (Half-)Finnish-American here, and your ruoka looks delish! My mom has made lohikeitto a couple times, and I always load up on karjalanpiirakkat on trips to the motherland.
(Apologies for any misspellings; my Finnish is todella huono.)
ETA Good on you for making the karjalanpiirakkat! I want to try it myself, and brought home some of the appropriate rice and flour, but haven’t got to it yet.
Love the mustikkapiirakka with the yoghurt topping. 😊
