The Malta Ranger Unit has reported a case of illegal dumping and burning in the northwest of the country, denouncing the act as a product of greed with widespread environmental and public health consequences.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the rangers detailed that an individual, known for dumping mixed material including metal, tyres, and other bulky waste, sets the piles alight and leaves the site. The material is later sorted so the metal scraps can be collected for cash.
The unit condemned the offender’s disregard for local residents, who are forced to inhale toxic smoke from the fires. “The greed of certain people knows no boundaries… Selfishness is widespread,” the rangers said.
The rangers confirmed they are continuing to monitor the situation and are working with the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) in the hope that the offender can be held accountable. They thanked ERA officers for their swift response to the incident.
