VANCOUVER, Wash. (KATU) — A “Stop ICE Brutality” rally took place at noon today at Vancouver City Hall, 415 West Sixth Street, in response to an incident involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and a local resident.

The rally, co-hosted by Indivisible Greater Vancouver and MoveOn-Clark County, aimed to protest the alleged assault of Jose Paniagua Calderon, 27, by ICE agents last Thursday.

According to witnesses and video footage, Paniagua Calderon was stopped by ICE agents in front of El Antojo restaurant on 2505 East Fourth Plain Boulevard where his car window was shattered, and he was forcibly removed from his car.

Witnesses claim an ICE vehicle ran over his foot, causing him to scream in pain. He was then reportedly loaded into an unmarked van without receiving immediate medical care.

He is currently held at the Tacoma ICE detention center and plans to consult a lawyer soon. His sister-in-law, Carmen Paniagua, described him as “a hardworking young man with a good heart and no history of legal issues” in a GoFundMe account set up to cover his medical and legal expenses.

Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin refuted the claims, stating, “FALSE. ICE did NOT run over this illegal alien’s leg.” McLaughlin described Paniagua Calderon’s reaction as “an Oscar-level performance” and claimed that medical evaluations showed “ZERO fractures, dislocations or injuries.”
