I’m really shocked and upset right now. Miss Finland recently posted something on social media that many Chinese people (including me) feel is discriminatory.

I want to understand: is this considered normal or acceptable in Finland? Is this her personal behavior, or does it reflect something more official?

Some people were even reacting with heart emojis — does that mean they support this kind of behavior?

As a Chinese person living in Finland, I feel really hurt. I genuinely want to know how Finnish people see this situation.

  1. I find it absolutely incredible she was able to timetravel here from the 50’s to do this gesture. Seriously I can’t think of last time I saw someone do this, let alone someone with a platform.

It’s appalling and embarrassing for the entire country. I wouldn’t be terribly surprised if she was a boomer, but people from her generation should absolutely know better.

  2. It’s not ok at all. It’s very racist. Anyone who doesn’t see it like that is either an idiot or acting like one.

  3. Finns are Mongols so it’s totally fine, we get a pass /s

    (In all seriousness, totally uncool)

  4. I had to make sure this wasn’t some AI ragebait post because it seemed so unbelievable someone in a position that deals with publicity would be stupid enough to do something like this.

Totally classless, this isn’t acceptable. From anyone.

  5. It’s not funny or clever, why do it. It can be funny if done right, in some Jimmy Carr, Anthony Jeselnik-esque joke that’s obviously meant to insult, with the humor being in the implication of the shared understanding that only a dick would do that.

She’s also 22, she should know better, but it’s understandable that she’s not mature enough to think about how she should act as an public person.

The heart emojis I can only guess. Maybe they just like her, but also this is a very xenophobic country. But also, racist people would not accept her as Miss Suomi given her name and complexion, so who the fuck knows

  6. Ironically, “slanted eyes” aren’t entirely uncommon among us Finns.

  7. Being called a racist no longer hits as hard as it used to.

  8. This kind of stuff was very common when I was a kid in the 80s and 90s. Since then we’ve grown up as a society and doing it in 2025 seems very backwards and frowned upon (hence the apology post).

  9. Yeah that’s fucked up. 0 excuses.

I have nothing but good will to my Chinese Finnish co-humans. You’re making Finland better, cooler, and we can only benefit from helping and sharing with each other.

She should face proper consequences for this.

I’m an ethnically Finnish Finn myself, if it matters.

  10. what do i think of it? for me, the situation is clear. mentally 12 year old forgot that what you upload to internet is not going anywhere. for me, she was a retarded choice and now the institution is..

    less..

  11. I have not seen anyone do this kind of shit since early grades in primary school, and even then, it was not common or popular.

This is very embarrassing and is even more ironic since she herself also has a foreign background. If you are asking if this is common, normal, or accepted, the answer is a resounding no, but apparently, there still are some people who think that this kind of dumb childish shit is funny.

  12. >I want to understand: is this considered normal or acceptable in Finland? Is this her personal behavior, or does it reflect something more official?

If this was considered normal and acceptable, would there be [articles](https://www.is.fi/viihde/art-2000011679049.html) [talking](https://www.iltalehti.fi/viihdeuutiset/a/07c35145-0ad2-4f0b-abe9-6365184337de) [about](https://www.iltalehti.fi/viihdeuutiset/a/6d6a9e62-8781-4970-9666-3309d6313623) [this](https://www.seiska.fi/kotimaa/nyt-puhuu-kohun-aiheuttanut-miss-suomi-sarah-dzafce/2015036) in all the tabloids?

    Of course it’s unacceptable.

  13. At the very least it’s childish behaviour and a bad joke. This is not seen as acceptable. Making slanted eyes is seen as a racist gesture. As for the people reacting with heart emojis, there are racist idiots in every country. I don’t get how it’s so hard for some people to just behave.

  14. We see this as extremely rasist, people got really mad. It is shameful and idiotic behavior. I am sorry you are hurt.

  15. While the photo and text added to it was taken and published by her friend, she should be more careful what her friends post about her while holding the title.

  16. No it’s not normal. Just really fucking weird. Also the whole beauty pageant thing has lost it glamour. The first time I even hear her name.

  17. It’s absolutely not normal or acceptable. If *anyone* near me would do something like that, I would say “mitä helvettiä sä just teit?” and distance myself from them.

That kind of stuff was done by some kids when I was in the primary school, but they were quickly told it’s unacceptable. Impossible to imagine a grown up woman doing that.

Myötähäpeä on kyllä suuri.

  23. That’s very much racist and mean. Also the apology is worse than a chatGPT one. As some other comments have said, that’s what a 9 year old might do in school.

  24. I’m not trying to defend her but from what I read*, it was a misunderstanding caused by her friend (who wrote the text and it got taken out of context)… but it’s hard to say if it’s true considering her attitude overall has been very childish (in a bad way) she really should consider that she’s representing the beauty of finland – outside and INSIDE, that’s what miss finland is about and that includes being a decent human being.

*”Iltalehti reached out to Dzafce, who commented on the matter via text message. According to her, the image is “completely out of context”.

    – I was eating in a restaurant with my friend and I had a severe headache and pain in my eye. I leaned on the table, rubbed my temples and stretched my eyes, because it relieved the pressure, she says in her message.

According to her, her friend thought the expression was funny and wanted to take a picture.

    – I smiled at the camera and they wrote their own text on it. That text was not written by me and is in no way related to my purpose. The picture was intended only for close friends, not to be shared more widely.

Dzafce says in her message that he does not accept racism. She herself has Kosovar roots.

    – I myself have experienced a lot of discrimination because of my background, and I would never do the same to others. This has been a misunderstanding and completely out of context.”

this only gives me the impression it’s okay in private – which pretty much means she’s fine with it at heart

  25. I think everyone who gets mad or upset something about this small is the problem him/her self. I bet there is thousand of people who make fun of finnish people and our culture and who cares mostly jokes have at least half true and so have the asians slanted eyes 😂😂

  26. shouldnt be a big deal but people tend to get their panties in a bunch over nothing nowadays. tells things are really good in society when minor inconveniences such as this get any attention at all. just my 2 cents
