Trump, echoing Putin, is calling for elections in Ukraine during Martial Law. We never hear Trump challenge Putin’s 25 year rule over, where he annulled the constitution to rule till 2036, or Putin banning opposition candidates like Boris Nadezhdin or Yekaterina Duntsova from running in elections.

Trump seems to swing back and forth between pro-Putin and frustrated with Putin. Let’s see if this lasts more than a few months.
For a country to have a fair election requires that all citizens of the country be able to particpate regardless of which region within that country they live in. Russian occupation prevents that right now. To believe fair elections could be held now is synonymous with believing Russia’s lie that the occupied territories aren’t really Ukraine.
Which is why both Russia and Trump keep pushing this message. The instant the occupied oblasts get excluded from a national Ukrainian election, the existence of that election itself will get used as “proof” that Ukraine no longer has a claim to those oblasts.
If Ukraine was suspending elections while at war, during a war where they were *not* fighting on their own soil but instead was fighting outside their own borders as the attacker, the complaints that they shouldn’t use martial law to suspend democracy would have merit. But when part of the country CANNOT participate because it’s occupied, that’s very very different.
As to people claiming Zelensky is only doing this as a power grab: Remember that his popularity is higher in the west of the country than in the east of it, so he’d have way better odds of winning if he held it now than if he waited to get the eastern part back.
By waiting until the occupied parts can participate, he’s actually helping *his opposition* have their fair share of the vote. Which is exactly the attitude a leader should have if that leader respects democracy as a principle.

Try this trick… Ignore everything he says about Ukraine. The conflict is much easier to follow this way.

If democracy is demanded of Georgia despite them being invaded and occupied by Russia, it’s only fair that same standard be applied on Ukraine.
