The Toronto Maple Leafs have finally managed to weather the storm of early-season injury troubles that plagued their forward group. Following the eventual departure of David Kampf via contract termination, the Leafs have managed to clear some of the congestion on their roster.
Now, however, rumors have surfaced that another veteran Maple Leaf is eyeing a change of scenery.
Report: Agreement with Brynas IF
According to reports out of Sweden, veteran forward Calle Jarnkrok has reached an agreement with Brynas IF of the SHL.
A Potential Homecoming
Jarnkrok began his professional career with Brynas in the 2009/10 season, making a reunion a logical step for the 34-year-old. While no specific details have surfaced regarding whether the contract would begin immediately via contract termination or next season, the timing suggests a future move. Jarnkrok is currently in the final year of his four-year deal with the Leafs, making a transfer for next year the most likely scenario.
The NHL Market Reality
Throughout his career, Jarnkrok has logged 737 NHL games, tallying 141 goals and 171 assists. The Leafs organization marks Jarnkrok’s fourth NHL team, but the writing may be on the wall regarding his future in North America.
If reports are accurate, there were no bites from other teams when the Leafs previously placed Jarnkrok on the trade market. The realization that a market for his services no longer realistically exists in the NHL is likely a prevailing factor in his decision to return to Europe.
Reflecting on a Versatile Career
Since arriving in the NHL, Jarnkrok has played a multitude of roles. Despite never winning a Stanley Cup or an individual trophy, his longevity and consistency are nothing to scoff at. If this truly marks the end of Jarnkrok’s time in North America, hopefully, he finds continued success back home in the SHL.
