Actually the upgrades are quite cool; you’ll be able to post parcels through the new doors that are being fitted to them.
The problem is that there really isn’t a standard size for post box doors, as a lot were cast using molds of different sizes, so they have to custom make the new door using the old one as a template. Which is why they have to take the box out of service for a month or so while the work is done.
Wait.
What, exactly, is being automated? What is there to automate in a hole in a postbox?
I suppose putting the automated system in first would have been too much to ask?
You post your letter & then it falls into a conveyor belt system, which will use cameras & the obligatory AI to redirect your letter to it’s destination – all automated to remove the good old shorts wearing postie
Surely will be full pretty quickly?
Hello neighbour! i think thats Kennington and just outside the post office?
As long as it doesn’t involve phones, apps or websites
The Post Office was a bastion of Britishness when I was a kid…. I had my savings book that I used to love depositing my birthday money in and then feeling chuffed when the clerk stamped my book with my yearly interest…there were the little tents for the telephone engineers and also things like postal orders and air mail envelopes…dog licences and car tax…oh and the black long pens on chains…yes I do miss the UK life I was brought up with… Change is inevitable but we seem
to throw lots away with little overall thought or consideration… bit of a nostalgia rant but there we are…🤷♂️🤓
I guarantee they’ve used the cheapest components, cheapest touchscreens and buggy software and they’ll all be broken in a week.
Designed to fail so the repair contractor has to come out and make money off the Post Office that ultimately comes from the cost of postage.

it cost me 9 pounds to send a small envelope about 30 miles down the road.
If this reduces cost im in
I personally LOVE the lockers. Dont have to talk to anyone and can post my ebay orders in peace. Excellent for us introverts.
These new automated post boxes are the Final Boss of post boxes lol
I have one of those near me as well.
I hope ours is a kebab dispenser.
Isn’t it already automated, as in, gravity places it in the collection basket?
I really don’t get the new ones. We’ve had large parcel post boxes for years. Am I missing something?
I have visited three Post Offices with these machines and ALL of them are permanently out of order.
So it fills up with parcels quickly and they can then control how many parcels they have because you would need to wait until the next day to try and put your parcel in it?
Its replacement will not be bomb proof… That’s a downgrade.
