  1. Do you want to talk to someone OP? I can’t find the button to send help for suicidal thoughts.

  2. I’ve regularly had the exact opposite – visiting other countries is nice, have even lived and worked abroad for several years, and every time it just makes me love the UK more.

Anyone who thinks this is some kind of hellish failed state really needs to get out more.

  3. Nah, it could be better but it’s far from the worst

  4. I travel a lot for work and the scary thing is how many countries we were traditionally taught to think of as ‘developing’ or ‘backward’ now feel like they have their sh1t together better than the UK does.

  5. When your mindset is like this, nothing is going to be any good in life.

  6. Whenever i went out of the UK i experienced the opposite, i came back home and i was surprised how well things work and how nice everything is. Even when i went to Spain, Portugal

(Given that indeed i think Spain has a better road network i think)

  7. Which country is that? Most I have ever visited have been the opposite.

  8. Amsterdam. I will never forget you my darling.

  9. OP should list the countries. And not compare his 2 weeks on holiday to the reality of living somewhere long term. We’d probably have a short list of countries above us and that would be about right.

  10. What complete and utter shite.

    A) The bullshit artists that make this kind of crap never specify where they’re on about. They’re encouraging you to fantasise.

    B) Being on holiday is more enjoyable than normal life.

  11. British people go to country where they are at an advantage socio economically then come home where they are at lower standing so think the country is wrong.

  12. Yep. Spent a fair bit of time in Fr, Be, Nl and De this year and in all of them there was less litter, everywhere I went felt more prosperous, fewer things were shuttered, the high streets of average towns were not full of bookies and charity shops, the food was decent and the prices were mostly less eye-watering. And the Netherlands in particular was full of hotties. I felt like Gimli in Lothlorien when I was walking round Utrecht and Tilburg. Some of the men were so hot I actively contemplated homosexuality for the first time since my teens.

I’m sure all of those countries have shit holes. I didn’t go to St Etienne, or Wuppertal, or Rotterdam, and I imagine they have rough bits. But **all** the average workaday towns I visited just felt nicer; better cared for, like the residents were actually proud to live there and worked to keep it tidy. Even the centre of Hamburg felt nicer and smarter than, say, Liverpool, which is probably its closest British comparison.

Then I came home to Huddersfield and OMFG.

  13. This is hilarious, because everytime I go abroad, I understand how great the UK is to live

Usa is a strange 3rd world hellscape

Most of Europe has worse social issues (excluding Scandinavian countries, we all look in envy at you guys)

In the UK, as long as you can get and keep a job (which is hilariously easy to do) you are absolutely fine

  14. I do love that us Brits measure countries based on train performance.

  15. Are these people too stupid to realise that having a holiday  is not the same as having pay taxes, work everyday and having to contend with all the local laws and deal with the same social issues?

  16. Sorry which country is not a dystopian nightmare with overpriced housing?

  17. The opposite honestly.

I cant really speak for Scandinavia but every time I go to continental Europe what I come away with is basically “like Britain but everyone smokes and theres more graffiti”.

Much of the public transport is actually even worse, I gained new found appreciation for our trains after suffering the DeutscheBahn.

  18. It can happen but again not everywhere.

What we see on social media is that the U.K is on a decline generally speaking. The moment you go to another country and you see things improving, you’ll begin to think we are on a larger decline.

Some of the Scandinavian countries mentioned here are great but then again they have their drawbacks too.

  19. I actually feel the opposite. I’m the son of an immigrant and when I go “back” for a visit, after 2 weeks I’m eager to get back to the UK. Sure it’s sunnier there but that’s about it, if I had to live there I’d probably be depressed.

  20. Norway. Sweden. Switzerland. Netherlands. Luxembourg. Denmark. All fit that bill to the greatest extent.

Germany is about the same as the UK, France is a bit lower and Belgium is kinda shit.

  21. Don’t worry, shit will get worse and the scapegoats will become more convincing. Get ready for some ethnic cleansing boys, maybe one of you will be the one pushing me into a gas chamber. Lol

  22. Bot post. Report. Account history is major sus.

  23. There is literally no point arguing about stuff like this as it’s completely subjective. I have done well thus have a nice life but I realise for many the struggle due to cost of living, poor transport etc. is hellish.

  24. I seem to see so many posts here/facebook about how shit the UK is, how fkd freedom of speech is here, how poor we are, how weak we are… we have our problems but sheesh!

Out media doesn’t help parroting this shite. I suspect there is a fair bit being fed into the internet echo chamber by nefarious actors, and then some folk repeating the same talking points. And 20% with genuine gripes probably.

If you say it enough, you will start to believe it type of thing.

  25. Went to America, was happy I live in the UK
Went to India, realised how big a prize I won in the where I was born lottery.

    This post is bs

  26. The whole attractivess myth only exists among people on the Internet who haven’t traveled…one of the most overrated places I’ve ever been is Brazil, we’re all lead to believe it’s exclusively bronze honeys in bikinis, but in reality is it gives America a good run for its money.

As for the other metrics, I’d say the only places ‘better’ would be those nations with the smallest wealth disparity, which are basically the Nordic countries only.

I think aside from those, the only other nation I’ve ever been to that makes me think ‘i could live here’ is New Zealand.

  27. Think this is the post that pushes me off Reddit. Absolutely unreal how much of a push there is by some kind of external force to get people to hate the country they live in. Reddit is complicit.

  28. Lived abroad for the past 20 years in various countries and I’ve never met an English person who wanted to go back.

  29. Yup this is pretty much how I felt any time I came back from Canada.

    I’ll go back one day

  30. Luxembourg did it for me. Everyone seemed ‘ok’ I walk around the U.K. and everyone seems noticeably more dishevelled and disheartened. Makes me sad to see.

  31. I went to Japan in October and and still feeling like this

  32. Netherlands, especially outwith Amsterdam. Eye opening
