CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — The Medical University of South Carolina is planning to purchase a large portion of the Citadel Mall in West Ashley, as project officials claim it will expand health care services in one of Charleston’s growing suburbs.
The purchase will be in the ballpark of $83.5 million, as the healthcare provider will take the vacant Sears box and the inline mall space, equalling 330,000 square feet in property. MUSC would also hold on to its 126,000 square feet it already operates in.
The purchase would leave in Dillard’s, Belk and Target.
MUSC would also lay claim to the parking spots outside of the designated areas. Parking for Target will remain in the retailer’s possession.
The mall has been owned and operated by Singerman Real Estate, a Chicago-based investment firm, since 2023.
MUSC has operated in the area since 2018, when the healthcare provider struck an agreement to lease the old J.C. Penney department store at the mall to work out of its old storefront. It opened to the public after renovations in 2020.
