1. I’d say majority are not fond of the current government

2. The article is not downplaying the racism, but more so saying that we should not be racist (obviously) cause China and other foreign powers have a well oiled machine on using every advantage against us.

3. Out currently politicians are assholes. Literally. Yes, they are against foreigners, but also against their own people, with cutting more and more from everyone and that money goes into their pockets.

5. The current scandal has been covered to death so its time to push a new angle to keep it fresh. I don’t think it should be a surprise to anyone that our adversaries will use any chance they get to wage information warfare and this case is not any different. It’s probably not a particularly controversial view, seeing as Russia has been pushing similar schemes forever.

   That said, giving them free ammo to use against us is a stupid mistake as said in the article. And yes, there are Finns who are not open minded and accepting, this is not controversial either.

6. It is the view of the people who support these racists. Something in the line of 15-20% of voters which translates to maybe something like 10% adult population. So, shamefully popular view.

   I don’t think it comes off like that at all. I think condemnation has been pretty much universal (save for the persut assholes). This specific paper has probably written something like 10-20 articles about it, I would guess.

   This specific article highlights a very real phenomena we should also be aware of. No where do they excuse the behaviour.

   Point is that every time something happens that China can use in its political game it will be used.

10. Everyone I know is outraged, including the 2 folks that admitted they voted Finn and said they won’t ever again. It is a right wing jingoist party and is adopting the American way of fabricating a problem only they can solve, it is the government in power but it appears to have lost favor from the people.

    Even if you find yourself in rural areas that support overt racism, they won’t act on it themselves, they’ll just mumble to themselves and whine about it later.

17. As a Chinese person, I want to say that this matter hasn’t garnered much attention within China. Everyone is busy opposing their own government and neighboring Japan. Of course, overseas Chinese are paying much more attention to this issue. The reactions from Japanese and Koreans are even stronger.

24. I don’t know if this answers your question but the eye-scandal pops to my head once or twice a day, and it always sends me quietly seething. Not because I thought racism didn’t exist in Finland, but because those people are confident in their shittiness. Especially the cunt, Eerola, who did the teeth, he seems so proud how thoroughly he’s shitting the bed.

    And the pointlessness! The whole idea was to show some solidarity to another to an airheaded idiot who had done the same, but there wasn’t like any narrative to go with it — not that satire would’ve excused it but it’s just hard to accept people in high office are this vile and simple with no apparent reason.

26. The point in the title is more about how situations like that can be used. For Russia that is an everyday occurrence. China has not really done that towards us, but for other countries that has been a thing.

    But why that opinion piece is talking about things that are not about judging racist mockery as racist mockery, that has everything to do with it being a right-wing tabloid. The ones enacting it of course don’t see it as a problem, nor do their voters, and their government coalition partners at the very least accept it to help their own political goals as a tradeoff. In other words, their reader base just wouldn’t take pointing it out well, and that’s why they don’t pull that string.

    So, like it usually goes everywhere.

    First of all. Great majority of Finnish people feel ashamed of the ex-miss Finland’s ”joke” and even more about the actions of populist and openly racist True Finns party (”Perussuomalaiset”, PS). Those folks are simple utter idiots, but in democracy even idiots have a voice. The ex-miss has apologized and paid a hefty price for her actions. What is utterly deplorable is the actions of the few politicians.

    What the article did point out how China’s propaganda machine is eager to leverage any these kind scandals. The Chinese lady who did the interview is a founder of a one-person association in Finland ”Chinese women association of Finland” and linked to organizing various events for Chinese embassy in Finland. Not a ”journalist” in the sense the term is understood, but a ”Chinese government-linked media-operator”.

    This does not mean the newspaper approves the racist gestures of the ex-miss and the few brainless politicians by any means. They still keep writing about this scandal as they should.

    Stupid people do stupid things, but let’s not attribute few individuals behavior to the whole nation who themselves suffers under immense mental toll of actions their less-able co-citizens. That would be racist behavior too.

34. When talking about “the Chinese” in this way, let’s agree that we mean their fascist “government”, and not the over a billion normal Chinese, who are mostly really nice people, like everywhere else. And are victims in this, too.
