The Policy Exchange is calling for a census and no-one else.
The Policy Exchange is part of the Tufton Street mob, a bunch of opaquely-funded right-wing “think tanks”
Common sense needs to be discussed?
The facts:
• Net migration has more than halved since 2023.
• Blaming migration for all housing problems is short-sighted. Until the Renters Rights Act comes into force, we will continue to have some of the worst renters’ rights in Europe. Insecure rights artificially inflates the housing crisis, because tenants get exploited.
• Linking to above point, supply and demand is only one part of a massive equation. Why does nobody blame unregulated private landlordism, the proliferation of Airbnb and holiday homes that stay empty 45 weeks of the year, etc. for the housing shortage? I’ve seen entire neighbourhoods filled with holiday homes (looking at you Devon & Cornwall).
• Our public services need more funding anyway.
• Social tensions/cohesion aren’t improved by endless scapegoating and negativity. So this feels like faux outrage and concern trolling, tbh
We could do it at the end of December and have every person travel to the town the father of the family is from.
Maybe sleep in a stable if the hotels are full
Who’s funding it?
The 2021 census cost the UK £820 million to £900 million according to the ONS. An emergency census would be sustainably more than this as none of the infrastructure needed to run one is in place.
Calls from whom? Ah, Tufton Street, of course!
What will it change, honestly?
People employing people illegally are not going to suddenly develop a conscience and stop.
It’s common knowledge, at least in my town, take away outlets, barbers, carwashs, even things like Uber eats are operated by criminal gangs and are fronts from criminal enterprise.
We already have policies in place that should stop this.
Why aren’t they being enforced? We’ve gutted our entire institutions of trading standards officers, etc. This was on purpose, it was ideological and now they want to take more of our civil liberties?
A more cynical mind would conclude this was deliberate. Especially seeing as Labour and the Tories are two cheeks of the same arse these days.
Why would anyone who’s here illegally or anyone who is to quote “harboring enemies of the state” tell the truth on a census
Ibtimes is a shit news source.
So build more houses
And what are they going to do? Knock on people’s houses and ask “are you housing any illegal immigrants today sir?”.
People like that are housed at the back of takeaways, barber shops, massage parlours, car washes, and other ungodly places engaged in modern slavery.
This is just a pointless call, as the government will say no, and then it will be on gbnews with a caption “GOVERNMENT DOES NOT WANT TO KNOW ABOUT ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS”.
Who didn’t build any in 14 years?
Holy shit…U mean U can’t import 100’s of thousands of people and not stress the most important aspects of society
Net immigration halved in the last year.
50,000 illegal workers recently scooped up.
Big drop in asylum seekers staying in hotels and a big decrease in the waiting list tha is to improved processing.Â
Where the fuck is this sudden surge certain rags and right wing think tanks are talking about? Is it from before past year by chance?
Years of Tories and Brexit increasing immigration and now all this attention and screeching when something is finally being done to get exactly what you want.
Go look at the stats and stop believing bullshit people FFS!
Would a Census even count people here illegally?
The last specific time I can remember hearing this phrase irl it was said by an older work colleague. A past retirement age guy. He is very right wing. I would say it’s generally a right wing sentiment but not exclusively. It’s right wing but also northern, to me. The kind of thing people across the spectrum might say in West Yorkshire.
how many more times we have to go in this endless circle before something actually happens
This is the first ive heard of this no one has been suggesting this for years, what a total shock.
