The list of road accident black spots is one of the pieces of information included in the ANSR Road Safety Observatory.

In addition to the A5, which has five identified black spots, the second most dangerous roads are the IC17 (Lisbon Inner Ring Road) and the IC20 (which connects Almada to Costa da Caparica), with four black spots each.

Sections of road with a maximum length of 200 meters where at least five accidents with victims have been recorded during a year are included on the list of black spots.

Also included in this list, with three black spots each, are the A20 – Porto Inner Regional Ring Road, National Road 206 (Famalicão-Guimarães), IC19 (Lisbon-Sintra) and IP7 (which connects Camarate to the Caia border).

The A2 (highway connecting Lisbon to the Algarve) and the A44 (Vila Nova de Gaia highway) each have two black spots.

In this list, the ANSR (National Road Safety Authority) presents as new additions recurring black spots, namely kilometer (Km) 5 of the A2, in the Almada area, Km 15 of the A20, in Porto, kilometres 4 and 5 of the IC17, in the Amadora area, and km 7 of the IP7, in Lisbon.

The ANSR black spot list refers to 2023, which identified 14 more black spots compared to the previous year.

In addition to black spots, the Road Safety Observatory also includes daily, monthly, and annual accident reports, as well as data on inspections and audits.

Provisional data from ANSR indicate that this year there were 140,118 road accidents on Portuguese roads, 4,375 more than in the same period last year, resulting in 423 deaths, 33 fewer, but 40 more serious injuries (2,681) and 450 more minor injuries (43,285).
