In a follow-up on the hepatitis A outbreak in the Czech Republic, the health ministry reports 3049 cases of hepatitis A in the country through December 14 this year. 34 deaths have been recorded.
The number of cases reported in recent weeks from approximately the 45th calendar week has a downward trend.
The reported cases of hepatitis A in 2025 significantly exceed the average and maximum numbers of reported cases in 2018 to 2024.
Cases are reported in all age groups, from the youngest children to the elderly. The most cases of hepatitis A in 2025 are reported in people in the age group 35-39 years, followed by the age groups 40-44 years, 30-34 years and 45-49 years. In children the most cases are recorded in the age group 5-9 years. Hepatitis A was reported in 14 children under 1 year of age.
Hepatitis A and the Hep A vaccine
The most cases of hepatitis A in 2025 are reported by the capital city of Prague (1303 cases), the Central Bohemian Region (461 cases) and the Moravian-Silesian Region (243 cases).
Of the total number of 3049 cases reported in 2025, 2350 people were hospitalized in the infectious disease department (77.1%).
