Pope Leo XIV has appointed Monsignor Peter Dai Bui as auxiliary bishop in the Phoenix Diocese, and will assist Bishop John Dolan.

“I am deeply grateful to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV for the appointment of Monsignor Peter Dai Bui as auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Phoenix,” said Bishop John Dolan in a statement Friday.

Bishop-elect Bui organized mission trips in Venezuela and Columbia before joining the Phoenix Diocese in the mid-2000s. He has also assisted with humanitarian and disaster relief efforts at the Vatican.

“When Cardinal Pierre called with the news, I was honestly in shock … But beneath that shock is profound gratitude to God and a deep desire to serve His people. I just want to be a good priest, now called to serve in a new way,” said Bui in a statement Friday.

A Phoenix Diocese spokesperson said Bui is set to be ordained into the role early next year.
