Batchewana First Nation Police say officers pulled over a suspended driver last week who was carrying fentanyl, methamphetamine and cocaine

A Sault man is facing multiple drug trafficking charges after Batchewana Police uncovered a huge stash of fentanyl, meth and cocaine last week.

At approximately 11:20 p.m. last Thursday, police conducted a traffic stop on Frontenac Street on the Rankin Reserve.

“The driver was found to be a twice-suspended driver and in possession of a large quantity of drugs,” says a Facebook post from Batchewana First Nation Police.

All told, police allege they found 35.35 grams of methamphetamine, 11.28 grams of cocaine and 4.5 grams of fentanyl.

Richard Atherton, 45, was arrested and charged with three counts of possession of a Schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking and two counts of driving while under suspension.

He was released from custody and is scheduled back in court in January 2026.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Atherton is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
