I know this makes me old but when I was young this was how you did that sum, she’s just wrote the ‘1’ too big, she’s ‘carrying’ it. 8+8 is 16 but the 16 is too big to fit in the ‘1’s column, so she does a little 1 and adds that to the ‘4’ in the ’10’s’ column, if she carrys on the sum she adds the 1 and 4 together to make 456 which is the correct answer.
