General Ikramuddin Saree, the former police chief for northeastern province of Takhar under the previous government, was assassinated in an attack in Tehran on Wednesday, sources confirmed to Amu.

One of his companions was also killed and another was wounded, sources added.

Details of the attack, including the motive and those responsible, were not immediately clear. Iranian authorities have not publicly commented on the incident.

Saree left Afghanistan after the Taliban returned to power in 2021 and had been living in Iran, the sources said. He was detained and questioned by Iranian security forces in November 2024 before being released, according to the sources.

Following the collapse of the former government, many former security officials fled to neighbouring countries, including Iran and Pakistan, fearing reprisals. In recent years, some have been deported due to a lack of legal residency documents.

The killing has raised concerns among some former political and military figures living in Iran, the sources said.
