So i've been in Norway for 4.5 months. I am that annoying guy who always wears shorts, no matter the weather or temperature. I got so used to the "cold" in Norway, that people were already warning me i would get too hot when i'd go back to Belgium. But now that I am back in Belgium, I'm FREEZING.
I know there are legitimate reasons and explanations for this, but this big difference is not normal at all. Climate is broken.

theres a cold wave in europe (its just normal december temps but we got used to abnormally warm ones)
Yes, we are really fucked as a planet. You’ll see wild varying degrees of denial in this thread and anger against me for saying it, and that is also pretty typical in Norway. I think it’s some of the first expressions of mass grief in humanity experiencing this incoming hell.
Anyway sorry for the ramble. You’re correct; this is bad. Merry Christmas mate
You have been deprived of tasty heart-shaped waffles is the issue.
The west coast of Norway has a lot milder climate than the rest of Norway because of warm currents from the Gulf of Mexico. It’s colder inland.
When I grew up, -20c was not unusual in december/January. And temperature changes of 5 or 10 degrees within a couple days were also normal.
Kinda depends where in Norway you are
I’m at 71°N and it’s raining here now 😐
We had cold weather and snow last week, now all is dark, wet and non-stick.
I was born in a Mediterranean country and lived there for 18 years. Winters were pretty much common to have 1m of snow for around 2 months AT LEAST, the temperature not going over -5 °C for 2 months at least, and -20 °C was also a common thing. Germany (where i live now) was pretty cold too. Now, my birthplace barely has any snow; temperatures are rarely below -5 °C during winter, and snowfall is typically around 30-40 cm, which is usually gone by the next day. O.o Now, i’m in Germany, I’ve never seen such a sunny place like here, and i freakin’ hate it! I love winter! In 40 years of my life, I have never had a sunny December without rain or snow at all, and this one is just like that. AND, just 2 days ago it was 12+ °C every day, morning around 4 °C, and NOW it’s -8 °C, during the day it was -4°C. Insane shift! But of course, still sunny. 🙂 I freakin’ hate what’s going on with climate. I didn’t see the real winter on the continent for 12-13 years. So, yeah, as you mentioned, the climate is broken as hell!
it’s the moisture. below zero there is very little in the air but around 5 degrees you get a lot which conducts heat. need to wear thicker stuff to compensate
You know it’s fake when it says cloudy. It’s always sunny in Bergen.
Hope these temperature will keep increasing.
One of the reason I choose Oslo to live in is because I am pretty sure it will become the new ibiza in a few years.
There’s no denying climate change is happening, but a few days of “weird” weather is not a good example of that. I’m sure it could happen 100 or even 200 years ago that Belgium was colder than some parts of Norway for a bit. Climate change is about the gradual changes over time.
I’m sure you are aware of this, but I think it’s still important to point out as some people are still not convinced of man-made climate change. I think that when we focus too much on unusual weather events and attribute them to climate change we give more reasons for them to be skeptical. Since it’s one more proof for them that “climate has always been changing”.
This is more of a general weather question but I will try to answer
Right now the weather is especially weird. It is usually hot in the ocean meaning that there is a lot of hot air from the coast. This is hitting most of the west coast including the north, so for the tourist going to Tromsø they get to see similar weather as in Bergen, and very little chance for skiing and increased avalanche risk. This has just happened over the last few days where the west coast has been getting hotter and the snow melting while the east coast and inland have gotten even colder.
You also see similar mild temperatures on Iceland, and even Svalbard has got temperatures above zero now right before christmas.
Things look like they will turn around over the weekend and the temperatures will again drop below zero for much of the country.
And while here in Australia it’s the other way around. Happy holidays!
That’s a perfectly normal Christmas temperature in Bergen. I live in Stavanger, and our climate is essentially the same, except Bergen had more rain while we have more wind.
You can end up with about 0C and snow, or 10C and rain. I think the odds of getting snow has gone down a bit, but temperatures on the western coast of Norway were never really low in winter.
If we get snow that sticks around for more than a day or two it’s worth noting the year. In that way, two years ago was notable for snow in Stavanger that lasted for months, and there was a lot of it 🙂
I’m over here in Iceland & the LOW temperature where I live was 9⁰C yesterday! That is nuts for the time of year, so think yourself lucky ;þ
It’s called climate change. These temperatures are the “new normal”. People need to wake up.

Had to double check the sub to make sure we’re talking the same “Bergen” here 😀
Ayy fellow Belgian Norway-dweller!
It’s indeed concerning, I’ve lived in Norway for the past 5 years and in just those 5 years, it went from ‘going skiing when you have time/feel like it’ to ‘going skiing whenever the snow allows it’ 🙁
I’m not gonna complain about the sunny weather in Brussels though!
Found the Belgian, 🤣 I’m sitting in South of Antwerp at the moment and it’s -4° ….. it’s just wrong
Yes, the climate is in trouble, but these temperatures is a weather thing. We’ve always had exceptional years both in summer and winter and in both directions. I think it was 2006 or something that we had snow in June in Oslo. This is an exceptionally mild winter in Norway, but that was known in advance and does not in itself tell you anything about the climate.
Behold, Ragnarok
Must be putins fault
