The chair of Denmark’s Defense Committee, Rasmus Jarlov, expressed an ironic opinion on social media about the possible purchase of Greenland by the United States, using Trump’s words as context. He published his reflections, sharing a post by financial analyst Lars Christensen, who, in turn, reposted Eurostat data on GDP growth in the third quarter of 2025.

According to Christensen’s data, the United States leads in GDP growth at 4.3%, while Denmark allegedly shows +9.5% of GDP. However, the Eurostat report of December 8 notes that Denmark’s growth is +2.3%, though it is the highest among EU countries. Jarlov, evidently, used the event to shift the context, hinting at the possibility of the United States purchasing Denmark’s Greenland.

“Not that we are satisfied, but the current growth rates in Denmark are acceptable. Soon we will start buying American states”

What is known about Trump’s statements regarding Denmark’s Greenland

At the end of 2024, Donald Trump stated that control over the island is an “absolute necessity” for the United States – for reasons of national security and freedom around the world. In response, Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede stressed that the island is not for sale.

On January 7, 2025, Trump at a press conference did not promise to refrain from using military or economic coercion to establish control over Greenland and the Panama Canal. In his Truth Social post he also wrote that a deal for Greenland to join the United States should take place, and urged to make this the world’s largest island “great again”.

On December 22, Trump again stated that Greenland is necessary for the United States’ national security, and announced the appointment of a special envoy on the island. The envoy was Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry.

Greenland is the world’s largest island and an autonomous territory of Denmark, with significant reserves of minerals and oil, as well as strategic facilities, including American ones.
