  1. It looks like OP posted an AMP link. These should load faster, but AMP is controversial because of [concerns over privacy and the Open Web](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmputatorBot/comments/ehrq3z/why_did_i_build_amputatorbot).

Maybe check out **the canonical page** instead: **[https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/12/26/israel-becomes-first-country-to-recognise-somaliland](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/12/26/israel-becomes-first-country-to-recognise-somaliland)**

  2. A fascinating development. Much of the world has been in (formal) denial that Somalia is a failed state. They haven’t had territorial control over Somaliland in decades- since 1991! It’s the largest unrecognized state in the world and surprisingly a stable one – at least more stable than the government that was supposed to be in control of the territory.

  3. I mean Somaliland was bound to get recognition eventually. It has been a fully functional country for around 35 years now. A lot of countries already have diplomatic relations with it and the only reason why nobody recognized it yet is because they fear the potential backlash of breaking the convention of keeping the post colonial era borders intact.

I thought Ethiopia would be the first, but as it turns out the first to do it is a country that doesn’t care about international gentleman agreements. I’m sure now that it happened other countries will slowly but surely follow.

  4. As an interesting tidbit Somaliland has its own air traffic control, and they have better radios than Mogadishu ATC. So often aircraft entering Somalian airspace are given conflicting instructions from the two ATC. And the currently agreed correct ATC (Mogadishu) has the harder to hear radios.
Both call themselves “Mogadishu” on the radio.

  5. I don’t know much about Somalia or Somaliland but i find it really “funny”, that suddenly israel decided to, on the surface, support self determination of people.

It’s like they went on a wiki list of states with limited recognition and chose the one that would cause the smallest of shitstorm.
